A process is disclosed for producing a carboxyl-containing polymer composition that allows the possibility of obtaining a carboxyl-containing polymer composition which exhibits excellent dispersibility in water or the like, has a viscosity increasing to a lower degree compared to the viscosity of a neutralized viscous liquid using an additive-free carboxyl-containing polymer, and has a high degree of transparency in a neutralized viscous liquid thereof. A carboxyl-containing polymer composition is obtained by polymerizing a monomer containing an &#x3b1;,&#x3b2;-unsaturated carboxylic acid as a main component in a presence of a polyol (iso)stearic acid ester. A polyol in the polyol (iso)stearic acid ester is a polyol selected from a specific group, and the polyol (iso)stearic acid ester is used in the polymerization in an amount of 0.2 to 7 parts by mass based on 100 parts by mass of the &#x3b1;,&#x3b2;-unsaturated carboxylic acid.

In manufacturing of a carboxyl group-containing water-soluble polymer by a precipitation polymerization method, a method which can improve production efficiency with increasing practicality continuously adds a monomer solution wherein a monomer component containing an &#x3b1;,&#x3b2;-unsaturated carboxylic acid is dissolved in an inert solvent in a concentration of 20 to 50% by volume to an inert solvent charged in a reaction vessel. The present invention has its objective to provide a gelling agent for a battery, which forms a paste gel in a short period of time on dissolution in an alkaline electrolyte. The gel has less bubbles and a high gel density. The gelling agent for a battery comprises granular carboxyl group-containing polymer particles having a median particle diameter of 100 to 800 &#x3bc;m and a bulk density of 0.30 g/ml or more, and has a gel turbidity of 200 ppm or less and a gel density of 1.37 g/ml or more in a gel. The gel is prepared by adding 2 parts by mass of the granular carboxyl group-containing polymer particles to 98 parts by mass of 40% by mass of an aqueous potassium hydroxide solution.
