A method of successively grinding a plurality of cams on a camshaft by performing a grinding cycle for each of the cams after each cam is brought into alignment with a grinding wheel through indexing movement in the axial direction thereof. The grinding cycle is performed with said camshaft being rotated and rocked respectively about its axis and a pivot axis parallel thereto and includes first to fourth steps. The substantial part of a stock removal of each cam is removed in the first step wherein the grinding wheel is infed at a rapid infeed rate as the camshaft is rotated at a slow rotational speed. The camshaft is rotated at a high rotational speed in the second step for removing from the cam a part of the stock removal which is to be cut off, but left uncut in the first step. Rotation of the camshaft at the high rotational speed is continued while the grinding wheel is infed in the third step for removing a grinding crack layer from the cam. Finally, the fourth step is carried out, wherein for finish grinding, the grinding wheel is infed against the cam rotating at a slow rotational speed.

Method of grinding cams on a camshaft

A method of grinding a workpiece for shaping it into a cam by imparting a rotary motion and a rocking motion, which conforms to the profile of a master cam, to the workpiece. In the first rough grinding step, a grinding wheel is rapidly entered into the workpiece while the workpiece is rotated at a low velocity. In the second rough grinding step, the grinding wheel is rapidly entered into the workpiece while the workpiece is rotated at a velocity greater than the low velocity. In the third rough grinding step, the wheel is rapidly entered into the workpiece while the workpiece is rotated at a high velocity. Each of the three steps includes a step for removing the portion left uncut in such a state that the infeed of the wheel is ceased. The depths of cut in the three steps DS.sub.1, DS.sub.2 and DS.sub.3, respectively, are so set that the following relation holds:

Method of forming cam by grinding

In a computerized numerical controller for a grinding machine, various grinding modes in which a plurality of portions on a cylindrical workpiece are respectively ground and plural sets of machining data each for use in machining a corresponding one of the workpiece portions are input by a manual data input device for storage in a memory device under the control of a data processor. For preparation of an NC program for the workpiece, the data processor first decides a grinding order in which the workpiece portions are successively ground, based upon the grinding modes and the machining data stored in the memory device. The grinding order is decided in accordance with a predetermined rule designed to decrease the number of dressing operations effected on a grinding wheel of the grinding machine. Then, the data processor automatically prepares a NC program based upon the decided grinding order and the machining data. In an NC operation, the data processor controls a pulse generating circuit in accordance with the NC program. Therefore, first and second feed devices responsive to feed pulses from the pulse generating circuit effect relative movement between a grinding wheel head and a workpiece support table in accordance with the NC program, whereby the workpiece portions can be successively ground in the automatically decided grinding order.

Numerical controller for a grinding machine

In a grinding machine having a workpiece drive device for rotating a workpiece about an axis and an infeed device for effecting relative infeed movement between a rotating grinding wheel and the workpiece, a computerized numerical controller is provided with a data input device for inputting a numerical control program for the workpiece and data indicative of the shape of the workpiece for storage in a memory device. A data processor of the controller calculates the rigidity of the workpiece based upon the shape data being stored in the memory device. Further, the data processor modifies by calculation rotational speed data and infeed rate data given in the numerical control program, based upon the calculated rigidity of the workpiece. The modified rotational speed data and the modified infeed rate data are respectively output to the workpiece drive device and the infeed device, so that the grinding condition of the workpiece is modified in accordance with the calculated rigidity of the workpiece.
