A storage system that functions as one or more logical volumes includes a control unit and a plurality of storage units connected to the control unit, wherein the control unit includes a memory that stores allocation status information that indicates status of allocation of the plurality of storage units to a logical volume; an access request responding unit that controls at least one storage unit among the plurality of storage units in response to a request for access to each logical volume from a host device; and a power saving controller that identifies an unused storage unit not allocated to any logical volume among the plurality of storage units on the basis of the allocation status information and performs power saving control on the identified unused storage unit.

Power consumption control on an identified unused storage unit

An OOB sequence monitoring unit detects that an OOB sequence carried out between a base device as a superior device and a connection I/F which operates even if an extension device is in a standby state has proceeded to a given stage. Based on the detection by the OOB sequence monitoring unit, a power supply control unit instructs a starting power supply unit to supply power. When the extension device starts, the OOB sequence is carried out between the extension device and the connection I/F of another extension device in the same manner. As a result, extension devices are started in decreasing order from the extension device closest to the superior device.

Storage device connected to a superior device and method of supplying power to the storage device

A storage apparatus connectable to an external apparatus through a connection line for data communication includes: a storage for storing data; a system controller for controlling data communication with the external apparatus through the connection line so as to allow the external apparatus to access the storage; and a power controller for controlling power supply to the storage, wherein the system controller controls the power controller to initiate supply of a power to the storage after establishing a communication linkage with the external apparatus through the connection line.

A storage system includes: a basic apparatus for transmitting an access request through a data input line for transmitting data; and an extension apparatus for receiving an access request from the basic apparatus through the data input line, the extension apparatus including a storage for storing data and a controller for controlling the access request from the basic apparatus, wherein the basic apparatus superimposes a voltage to the data input line in accordance with the access request, and wherein the extension apparatus includes an upper input voltage detector for detecting the voltage superimposed on the upper data input line and includes a power controller for controlling the power supply to the controller on the basis of the detected voltage.
