To provide an inflator which can be easily manufactured in a simple manufacturing process so as not to be disassembled. In an inflator, an orifice memberof a bottleis provided with projectionsformed on the periphery of the orifice member, extending in the axial direction thereof, and key groovesformed in the periphery of the orifice member, extending in the axial direction thereof. A diffuseris provided, in the inner periphery thereof, with guide groovesfor guiding the projectionsof the orifice memberwhen the diffuserand the orifice memberare coupled with each other, grooveswhich mate with the projectionsafter the diffuseror the orifice memberrotates, and key grooveswhich associate with the key groovesof the orifice member. Keyswhich are inserted into the key groovesandand thereby prevent the orifice memberor the diffuserfrom rotating are also provided. The orifice memberand the diffuserare coupled with each other, either one of the components is rotated, and both components are thereby connected to each other.

Inflator

An inflator including a piston which can reliably break a sealing plate. The inflator includes a piston which is two-forked at an end thereof and is provided with two cutting edges. The cutting edges come into contact with portions of a sealing plate which swells toward the piston side by being pushed by a high-pressure gas stored in a bottle. The portions being offset from the vertex of the swelling sealing plate. Each cutting edge is tapered at the outer side thereof, and the tip of the cutting edge is thereby positioned at the inner side of the periphery of the piston. The angle formed between the axis of each cutting edge and the surface of the sealing plate is increased. Deformation of the cutting edges toward the outside and slip thereof along the spherical surface can be suppressed.

A stored-gas inflator includes a pressure-resistant container having a high-pressure-gas chamber and a gas outlet for ejecting gas from the high-pressure-gas chamber; a burst shim attached to the gas outlet for sealing thereof; a duct disposed inside the high-pressure-gas chamber having an end facing the burst shim; and an initiator attached to the duct for generating gas pressure so that the gas pressure is guided through the duct to push the burst shim. The stored-gas inflator can easily eject gas with significantly lower bursting pressure to burst the burst shim, and a lower-output initiator can be used.

Stored-gas inflator

A head protective bag for vehicle passengers. The bag includes a lower section of which is tightly expanded when the bag is inflated. The protective bag includes an cabin side sheet and a window sheet. The sheets are overlapped and then coupled together along a line to form a main airway and small cells between the sheets. A front portion of the bag is located along an A-pillar of the vehicle in a folded state. An intermediate portion and a rear portion of the bag are located along a roof side rail and a C-pillar in a folded state. If the bag is maximally inflated without being installed in the vehicle, the dimension L from the through hole of a lowermost projection of the front section of the bag to the through hole of a lowermost projection of the rear section of the bag is smaller than the linear distance S from a position at which the lowermost front projection is secured to the A-pillar to a position at which the lowermost rear projection is secured to the C-pillar.

Head protective bag

A stored gas inflator is formed by a pressure vessel including a gas port, a small chamber facing the gas port, and a main chamber situated adjacent to the small chamber and having a capacity larger than that of the small chamber. A high pressure gas is filled in the small chamber and the main chamber. A first partition closes the gas port, and a second partition separates the small chamber and the main chamber so that a burst pressure of the second partition is set to be lower than a stored gas pressure in the main chamber. A gas blasting initiator is mounted to the small chamber for applying burst pressure to at least one of the first and second partitions to allow the main chamber to eject the gas.

Stored gas inflator

An air bag device with improved initial restraining capability includes an inflator that provides for shortening the starting time for rising the pressure of an airbag and also the time required for the pressure to reach the maximum value. The inflator includes a propellant, an igniter for igniting the propellant, a combustion chamber in which the propellant is burned, a filter chamber in which a filter is accommodated, a partition separating the combustion chamber and the filter chamber, communication orifices formed in the partition for allowing the communication between the combustion chamber and the filter chamber, and gas ports for supplying inflating gas into an airbag, and further comprises aluminum films which are broken and open the communication orifices at a predetermined pressure inside the combustion chamber and air-tightly close the communication orifices until the pressure reaches the predetermined pressure.

Airbag device

An airbag device is formed of an airbag, a retainer, and an inflator. The airbag is a bag-like configuration having a triangle section. The width of a front surface of the airbag and the width of mounting portions are substantially the same. The airbag is folded, but substantially not folded in the width direction, and is accommodated in the retainer. The retainer has an elongated configuration extending in the width direction of the vehicle body and thus can be installed in a long narrow space. The inflator may have an elongated and flexible body and housed in a chamber of the retainer.

Airbag device and instrument panel

A bag for protecting a head of an automobile passenger is formed of a main path having a gas inlet, and a cushion connected to the main path and having chambers communicating with the main path to be expand as a result of gas entering into the cushion from the main path. The chambers includes an upper chamber extending along a top side in a direction of a line extending from the main path and having one end connected to the main path; a side chamber connected to the other end of the upper chamber and extending downwardly from the top side; a lower chamber extending along the bottom side of the bag and having one end connected to the side chamber; and an intermediate chamber communicating with and disposed between the lower chamber and the upper chamber, and separated from the side chamber. The bag can expand smoothly and the required strength is reduced as a result of preventing localized excess stress.

When the connection of the buckle main body A with the tongue is to be released during normal operation, the operating member is operated and is moved to the position where the engagement of the tongue with the latch member can be released. In this case, the locking member can be moved toward the position where the engagement of the tongue with the latch member can be released, and the locking member is perfectly moved to the position where the engagement of the tongue with the latch member can be released by the operating member. When impact is applied on the buckle unit, control device prevents the locking member from moving toward the position where the engagement of the tongue with the latch member can be released. For this reason, the engagement of the tongue with the latch member cannot be released, and the connection of the buckle main body with the tongue can be maintained.

A shoulder adjuster which comprises: a guide rail shaped into a long plate and formed with a longitudinally extending slot at its central portion; a slider arranged along the vehicular compartment side of the guide rail and made slidable in a longitudinal direction of the guide rail; a female thread formed in the slider for mounting a shoulder anchor; and devices for retaining the slider on the guide rail at a predetermined interval. The slider has a cylindrical portion to be fitted in the slot, and the female thread formed in the inner circumference of the cylindrical portion.

A cover for accommodating an air bag, which is provided at its inner surface with an array of spaced holes for starting tear at a start of an operation of the air bag, is characterized in that ends of the holes in the direction of the array have acute shapes converging toward the adjacent holes, respectively.

Disclosed is a shoulder adjuster comprising: a guide rail fitted so that the longitudinal direction is set as a vertical directions to a vehicle and provided with a plurality of notches formed at intervals in the longitudinal direction; and a slide member slidable in the longitudinal direction of the guide rail and having engaging parts engaging with the notches and a shoulder anchor fitting part. The guide rail consists of a synthetic resin guide rail and a metal guide rail so that the slide member engages with the synthetic resin guide rail during an emergency, and during a non-emergency the synthetic resin guide rail is deformed to make the slide member engage with the metal guide rail.

A retainer used for an air bag is formed of synthetic resin-impregnated paper. The retainer is reduced in weight, has a shape adaptibility and can be served at a reduced cost. Further, the attaching operation is easy to improve productivity.

A cover for a vehicle air bag comprises an external surface layer injection-molded from a thermoplastic material having a JIS-A hardness of 20 to 90 and a core layer injection-molded from a thermoplastic material having a bending elastic modulus (JIS K 7203) of not less than about 1000 kg/cm.sup.2 and a hardness greater than that of the surface layer. The core has weakened zones along which the cover breaks when the air bag is inflated.

Cover for a vehicle air bag

An automotive air bag system has an air bag and inflators for inflating the bag. The bag and the inflators are held in a holder. A modular cover surrounding the bag engages the holder via clearance such that the cover is held by the holder so as to be movable for a given distance toward and/or away from the passenger.
