An electromechanical transducer includes a first electromagnetic element and a second electromagnetic element, such as electrodes, disposed opposite to each other with a sealed cavity therebetween. The sealed cavity is formed by removing a sacrifice layer and then performing sealing. A sealing portion is formed by superposing a film of a hardened second sealing material that has fluidity at normal temperature on a film of a first sealing material that does not have fluidity at normal temperature.

Provided is a method of manufacturing a capacitive electromechanical transducer, including: forming a lower electrode layer on a substrate; forming a sacrificial layer on the lower electrode layer; forming by application a resist layer on the sacrificial layer to form a cavity pattern; forming an insulating layer above regions including a region that contains the resist layer used to form the cavity pattern, and then removing a part of the insulating layer that is formed above the resist layer along with the resist layer, thereby leaving the insulating layer in the other regions than the region where the cavity pattern has been formed; forming a vibrating film above the region where the cavity pattern has been formed and the regions where the insulating layer remains; and removing the sacrificial layer to form a cavity.

The apparatus includes a light source which irradiates the sample with light, an imaging spectrometer which spectroscopically measures light reflected by the sample and senses an image, a first calculator which obtains amplitude information on an amplitude of a spectral reflectance of the sample based on the image sensed by the imaging spectrometer within a predetermined wavelength range of spectral reflectance spectra obtained by the spectrometer, a memory which holds in advance relationship information representing a relationship between the amplitude information of the spectral reflectance and an absorption coefficient, and a second calculator which obtains an absorption coefficient of the sample based on the amplitude information obtained by the first calculator and the relationship information held in the memory.

Evaluation apparatus and evaluation method

An evaluation apparatus which evaluates a sample having a porous layer. The apparatus includes a light source which irradiates the sample with light, an imaging spectrometer which spectroscopically measures light reflected by the sample and senses an image, a first calculator which obtains amplitude information on an amplitude of a spectral reflectance of the sample based on the image sensed by the imaging spectrometer, a memory which holds in advance relationship information representing a relationship between amplitude information of spectral reflectance of a member having a porous layer and an absorption coefficient of the porous layer of the member, and a second calculator which obtains an absorption coefficient of the sample based on the amplitude information obtained by the first calculator and the relationship information held in the memory.

A liquid crystal device, comprising: a pair of substrates each provided with an electrode including one substrate having thereon a color filter and a coating layer, and a liquid crystal layer comprising a chiral smectic liquid crystal disposed together with spacer beads between the pair of substrates, wherein the liquid crystal layer has a thickness smaller than a diameter of the spacer beads and a maximum thickness of the coating layer, the coating layer having a pencil hardness of at most 7 H. The above layer structure between the substrates is effective in improving resistance to external shock and providing a uniform cell gap.

A display device is constituted by a pair of substrates at least one of which is provided with a display electrode. The display electrode comprises an electroconductive transparent film comprising indium oxide and/or tin oxide and having a surface unevenness of at most 30 &angst;. The transparent film may preferably be an ITO film containing an amorphous component. The transparent film is effective in improving a surface flatness allowing a good alignment control performance while retaining a good transmittance and a low sheet resistance and is readily etched with weak acid to suppress peeling of an underlying layer thereof and an occurrence of microcracks therein.

Method of making a display device with electrode characteristics

A color liquid crystal device is constituted by a pair of rectangular substrates disposed opposite to each other to form a cell structure having a liquid crystal injection port, and a liquid crystal injected into the cell structure through the liquid crystal injection port. The pair of rectangular substrates includes a first substrate provided with a color filter and stripe electrodes disposed on the color filter and a second substrate provided with stripe electrodes disposed opposite to and intersecting the stripe electrodes on the first substrate. On each rectangular substrate, the stripe electrodes are divided into two groups which are electrically connected to external drive circuits disposed along one and the other, respectively, of mutually opposite sides of the rectangular substrate. A display device includes a multiplicity of pixels arranged in a matrix of rows and columns, each pixel including a plurality of color pixels each divided into a plurality of sub-color pixels having mutually different areas. The plurality of sub-color pixels are arranged in the row or column direction in different manners for at least two of said plurality of color pixels. As a result, the sub-color pixels may be arranged so that, when the respective color pixels are driven to display an identical gradation level, a ratio of a row-direction line width to a column-direction line width is closer to 1 than the ratio obtained when all the color pixels have an identical sub-color pixel arrangement, whereby numerals and characters, for example, can be displayed at an improved display quality.

Display device having different arrangements of larger and smaller

A color liquid crystal display device includes a first substrate having thereon a layer of plural color filter segments and a layer of first transparent electrodes disposed in superposition with the layer of color filter segments, a second substrate disposed opposite to and spaced apart from the first substrate and having thereon a layer of second transparent electrodes intersecting with the first transparent electrodes, and a liquid crystal disposed between the first and second substrates so as to form plural color pixels each at a region of intersection of the first and second transparent electrodes superposed with one of the color filter segments while leaving a pixel spacing between the plural color pixels. The first substrate is provided with a first light-interrupting layer comprising a material identical to that of at least one of the plural color filter segments and disposed at a portion of the pixel spacing so as to mask the portion, and at least one of the first and second substrates is provided with a second light-interrupting layer masking a remaining portion of the pixel spacing. The first and second light-interrupting layers as a whole are effective in preventing leakage of light between color pixels, thus providing images with a high contrast and an excellent display quality.

Color liquid crystal display device and process for producing same

The invention provides a color liquid crystal panel which has a liquid crystal placed between a first substrate and a second substrate, the first substrate having formed thereon a plurality of color filter films and transparent electrodes and the second substrate having formed thereto a transparent electrode. It also has first light-shielding layer sections. formed on the first substrate either in the same layer as the color filter film or in a layer at the substrate side from the color filter films, without contacting the color filter films. It further has second light-shielding layer sections formed in a layer at the liquid crystal layer side from the color filter films. Light is completely shielded by the first light-shielding layer sections and/or the second light-shielding layer section(s) between the color filter films. Such a color liquid crystal panel is highly effective in shielding the gaps between the color filter films, and is less reflective to external light or the like at the display surface.

A ferroelectric liquid crystal panel is prepared by injecting a ferroelectric liquid crystal into a liquid crystal panel through a process including at least four steps, i.e., a first step of reducing a pressure and evacuating gas within the liquid crystal panel, a second step of applying the ferroelectric liquid crystal to an injection port of the liquid crystal panel, a third step of causing the liquid crystal to enter into the liquid crystal panel under an increasing pressure, and a fourth step of completing injection of the liquid crystal into the liquid crystal panel under an elevated pressure. In the process, the liquid crystal panel is held at a higher temperature in the first step than in the second step. As a result, it is possible to obtain a ferroelectric liquid crystal panel which contains a ferroelectric liquid crystal at a sufficiently high packing density, free from occurrence of voids even after standing at a low temperature and has a uniform alignment state over the entire panel area.

A liquid crystal device is constituted by a pair of oppositely spaced substrate each having on its opposite surface a group of stripe electrodes disposed to intersect with those disposed on the other substrate, and a liquid crystal disposed between the substrates so as to be driven by a voltage applied through the stripe electrodes. The group of stripe electrodes on at least one of the pair of substrates are formed through a lithographic step including dividing the stripe electrodes into at least two divisions at a line parallel (or perpendicular) to the extension of the stripe electrodes, and repeating a pattern exposure for each division of the stripe electrodes so as to dispose a joint between the divisions of the stripe electrodes at a non-display part including a spacing between two stripe electrode on the same substrate (or at a part in alignment with a non-display part including a spacing between two stripe electrodes on the opposite substrate). In an embodiment, the liquid crystal device is provided with a dummy electrode pattern for promoting the liquid crystal injection.
