There is provided an information recording medium that reduces operation of shifting information backward or putting information forward closer together upon recording/deleting/dividing information to facilitate processes of recording/deleting/dividing information. An information recording medium records Programscomposed of image data, etc., UPGRthat refers to at least a part of the Programs, PGRGthat refers to the UPGR, a PGRM that collectively records the UPGRand reference information thereof, and a PGRGM that collectively records the PGRGand reference information thereof. When recording the UPGR, the information recording medium refers to the reference information contained in the PGRM, and when invalid reference information or reference information giving no reference to any UPGRis present, records the UPGRusing the reference information. When recording the PGRG, the information recording medium refers to the reference information contained in the PGRGM, and when invalid reference information or reference information giving no reference to any PGRGis present, records the PGRGusing the reference information.

A controller of a recording device issues a secure command to a storage device, and then waits the time estimated necessary for the storage device to execute the secure command before issuing the next secure command. When a controller of the storage device is executing the previous command, it notifies the recording device of being in process. When the previous command has been completed normally, the controller moves to the next process. Information for estimating the execution time of the command is obtained from the storage device in advance.

A technology is provided to improve tamper resistance in encrypting data to be secured and inputting/outputting the data between a recording device and a host device. When the recording device issues an input/output command to a storage device to input/output data to be secured, the recording device attaches an ID to the command to identify to which cryptographic input/output processing the command belongs. Upon reception of a sequence command, the storage device receives the command if its ID has been allocated and the command is verified to have been issued in the correct sequence. The sequence ID is used to identify a process system while appropriately managing the steps of executing commands.

There are described a data recording system, a data recording method, and a recording medium, all of which are directed to enabling easy editing of AV data without involvement of duplication of the AV data, as well as to eliminating a necessity for an additional data recording region. In the recording system, at the time of recording of primary data, there is prepared an original file which stores link data formed by arranging in sequence address data for reproduction purposes stored in a recording region on a recording medium. Further, through editing of the original file, there is prepared a virtual file which stores link data formed by arranging in sequence address data for reproduction purposes stored in the recording region on the recording medium. An object of the present invention is to suppress fragmentation occurring due to repeated storing and deleting small capacity file data, while effectively storing large capacity real time file data. To achieve this object, according to the present invention, a block relying on a physical storage area, and a continuous plurality of the blocks, constitute a unit. The unit is set at a capacity at which real time processing is guaranteed. Image data or other such real time file data is stored with in units. Further, in a case of data processed in non-real time, the data is stored in blocks. A unit attribute table for managing the unit is arranged, and based on this unit attribute table, a determination is made as to whether or not the unit can be used at the time of storage.

A recording area of a hard disk is managed by units. Each unit comprises physically continuous recording regions having predetermined size, and usage status of the unit is stored in an allocation unit (AU) management table. Data requiring a real time processing is stored in each unit. When the usage status of the unit is changed or modified due to the recording or deletion of data, the AU management table is updated and then information indicative of the fact that the AU management table has been updated is recorded. An apparatus where the final change is made is detected at the time the hard disk is inserted or a file system is initialized. And if the apparatus which last made the change adopts the file system which does not use the AU management table, then the table is reconfigured so as to retain the consistency of the AU management table.

Method and apparatus for controlling the recording of digital information, by using unit management table

A recording apparatus includes an MPEG encoder, and compressed data from the MPEG encoder and data of an index (a transfer rate and a necessary memory capacity for the transfer rate, or a transfer rate and a rate difference characteristic) are multiplexed and recorded on an optical disc. In a reproducing apparatus, a bit stream read from the optical disc is converted into variable bit rate data by a CD decoder and a CD-ROM decoder. The variable bit rate data is once stored in a system buffer, and then, supplied to an MPEG decoder from the system buffer. The index is extracted by a microcomputer which determines whether or not it is possible to reproduce the optical disc through comparison of the necessary memory capacity and a capacity of the system buffer. If not reproduced, the optical disc is ejected. In a case of simple reproduction, data stored in an output buffer is repeatedly outputted during a time that an operation of the MPEG decoder is suspended.
