The present invention makes it possible (1) to produce a natural rubber wet master batch and/or a synthetic isoprene rubber wet master batch by mixing a slurry solution of biodegraded rubber powder dispersed in water with a natural rubber latex solution and/or a synthetic isoprene rubber latex solution. Further, the present invention makes it possible (2) to produce a natural rubber wet master batch and/or a synthetic isoprene rubber wet master rubber powder with a natural rubber latex solution and/or a synthetic isoprene batch by mixing a slurry solution of dispersed carbon black and/or silica and rubber latex solution. A rubber composition having high physical properties can be obtained by adding a natural rubber master batch and/or a synthetic isoprene rubber master batch obtained by drying the natural rubber wet master batch and/or the synthetic isoprene rubber wet master batch. Further, the rubber composition containing the wet master batch obtained by the method in combination of above (1) and (2) also exhibits high physical properties.

A powder rubber obtained by crushing a waste rubber comprising various kinds of rubbers is subjected to treatment of making unevenness on a surface thereof. A method in which a microorganism growing with a rubber being an only carbon source and powder rubber having an average particle diameter of 1 mm or less are added to a culture medium to cultivate the microorganism can be applied as treatment of making the unevenness. The powder rubber is decomposed by this method, and the surface area is increased, whereby a rubber composition which is excellent in abrasion resistance, fracture characteristics and crack growth resistance can be obtained. The present invention relates to an electrorheological semisolid capable of changing the rheological characteristics by an application of voltage. The semisolid is composed of 20-70 weight. Parts of carbonaceous particulates having an average particle size of 0.1-500 .mu.m and a carbon/hydrogen atomic ratio (C/H ratio) of 1.2-5 which are dispersed in 80-30 weight % of a dispersion medium comprising a partially crosslinked electric insulating polymer having a penetration of 40-475 at 25.degree. C., or into 80-30 weight % of a dispersion medium selected from an electric insulating oil having a viscosity of 5000 to 10.sup.9 centistokes at 25.degree. A method for producing a carbonaceous powder which can be used as dielectric fine particles to be dispersed in an insulating oil to produce an electrorheological fluid is provided. The method comprises the steps of subjecting a starting organic material selected from the group consisting of coal, coal tar, coal tar pitch, liquefied coal, coke, petroleum, petroleum tar, petroleum pitch, and resins to a heat treatment at a maximum temperature of 300.degree. to 800.degree. A positive electrode and a negative electrode are disposed in face-to-face relation to allow a distance between the electrodes to change, and an electrorheological fluid is filled between the electrodes. When an external force is applied to the electrorheological fluid via the electrodes, a normal stress occurs in the electrorheological fluid. This normal stress is greater than a shearing stress occurring in the electrorheological fluid, and an area in which displacement is proportional to the stress is large. Hence, the electrorheological fluid is applicable to various apparatuses such as a vibration controller and a fixing apparatus.

Electroviscous fluid

Electrorheological fluids display swift and reversible increase in apparent viscosity under application of an electrical potential difference to the fluid, and are composed generally of electrical insulating oily medium and dielectric fine-particles dispersed therein. It is an object of the present invention to provide an electrorheological fluid capable of exhibiting enhanced electrorheological effect with smaller electric power consumption. Electrorheological fluid according to the present invention comprises particulates having a specific gravity of not smaller than 1.2 and water content of not larger than 4 wt. % dispersed in an electrical insulating oily medium havingf P.dbd.N bonds in the molecule.

Electrorheological fluids comprising carbonaceous particulates dispersed

Electrorheological fluids display swift and reversible increase in apparent viscosity under application of an electrical potential difference to the fluid, and are composed generally of electrical insulating oily medium and dielectric fine-particles dispersed therein. At the initial stage of development, electrorheological fluids are prepared by dispersing water-carrying hydrophilic particulates in an electrical insulating oily medium. However, there are such defects as a restriction on usable temperatures so as to avoid evaporation or freezing of the water, an extreme increase in the electric current flow as the temperature raises, inferior stability caused by transfer of water etc. It is an object of the persent invention is to provide nonaqueous type electrorheological fluids having improved electrorheological property. The electrorheological fluid of the present invention is a nonaqueous type electrorheological fluid which comprises organic or inorganic particulates containing not more than 1 wt. % of water and dispersed in an oily medium superior in electrical insulation, wherein the improvement is that said fluid comprises from 0.001 wt. % to 10 wt. % of a compound having a functional group containing at least one atom selected from the group consisted of oxygen atom, nitrogen atom, sulfur atom and phosphorous atom.

The electroviscous fluid is a suspension composed of a finely divided dielectric solid dispersed in an electrically nonconductive oil. The viscosity of the fluid increases swiftly and reversibly under an influence of electric field applied thereto and the fluid turns to a state of plastic or solid when the influence is sufficiently strong. The electroviscous fluid of the present invention comprises 1-60% by weight of a dispersed phase of carbonaceous particulates having average particle size of 0.01-100 micrometer, and 99-40% by weight of a continuous liquid phase of an electric insulating oil having a viscosity of 0.65-500 centistokes at room temperature. The electroviscous fluid exhibits an excellent electroviscous effect even at a high temperature with a low electric power consumption together with maintaining the improved electroviscous effect for a long period of time.
