A bearing is located in a bore formed in a casing for rotatably supporting a shaft extending inside the casing and a shaft seal is located between the shaft and the bearing bore and spaced from the bearing in a longitudinal direction of the shaft. An oil chamber is defined by the shaft seal and the bearing. An oil feed hole is formed in the casing for directly feeding an oil into the oil chamber from an oil source. The oil is then directed to the bearing from the oil chamber. A partition plate is placed in the oil chamber to form a gap between the shaft and itself (partition plate) for allowing part of the oil to flow to the bearing from the oil chamber through the gap and allowing the remainder of the oil to be dammned by the partition plate to form an oil pool in which the shall seal is always immersed.

In a lysholm compressor having intermeshing male and female rotors rotated in a casing to compress an axially flowing gas, discharge-side shafts of the rotors are borne by discharge-side bearings to fix the discharge-side shafts in thrust direction while suction-side shafts of the rotors are borne by suction-side bearings to allow the suction-side shafts to move in the thrust direction. Clearances of the rotors to the casing are properly set or selected.

One of male and female rotor elements is coated with a coating which is different in hardness from the other uncoated element. Even when the rotor elements come to contact with each other during the operation due to thermal expansion or the like, because of the difference in hardness between the coating and the other uncoated element, either of them which has a less degree of hardness is scraped off. As a result, accident due to contact between the male and female rotor elements can be prevented and the screw rotor can be operated with an optimum clearance between the elements.

The center of gravity of a retaining pin which is struck into a retaining-pin receiving hole to join a rotor barrel with a rotor shaft is eccentrically positioned toward the leading end of the pin beyond the axis of the shaft so that upon rotation of the rotor, the pin is forced to thrust toward the bottom of the hole by the centrifugal force, thereby preventing the pin from pulling out of the hole.
