Described herein are textured glass-based articles. The textured glass based articles may include a glass-based substrate including a first major surface and a second major surface. At least a portion of one or both of the first major surface and the second major surface is textured, wherein the portion of the one or both of the first major surface and the second major surface that are textured may have a sparkle at 140 ppi of less than or equal to 5% and an uncoupled distinctness-of-image of at least 78%. Methods for making such articles are also described herein.

Textured glass-based articles

Foldable apparatus can comprise a foldable substrate comprising a substrate thickness and a central portion positioned between a first portion and a second portion. The central portion can comprise a central thickness less than the substrate thickness. A first maximum tensile stress of a first tensile stress region in the first portion and a second maximum tensile stress of the second tensile stress region in the second portion can be less than a third maximum tensile stress of a central tensile stress region in the central portion. Ribbons can comprise a ribbon thickness and a central portion positioned between a first portion and a second portion. The central portion can comprise a first central compressive stress region and a second central compressive stress region. In some embodiments, methods of processing a ribbon can comprise masking the first portion, masking the second portion, and chemically strengthening the central portion.

Foldable apparatus, ribbons, and methods of making

A glass article is provided that includes: a glass substrate comprising a thickness and a primary surface; and a textured region defined by the primary surface. The textured region comprises a low spatial frequency region and a high spatial frequency region substantially superimposed within the low spatial frequency region. Further, the low spatial frequency region comprises an average lateral feature size that exceeds an average lateral feature size of the high spatial frequency region. In addition, the textured region comprises a surface roughness (R) from about 10 nm to about 1000 nm.

Textured, antiglare glass articles and methods of making the same

Methods for regenerating a salt bath composition include heating the salt bath composition to an ion exchange temperature to form a molten salt bath. The methods may further include contacting at least a portion of an ion-exchangeable article that includes lithium oxide (LiO) with the molten salt bath. Lithium cations may diffuse from the ion-exchangeable article and into the molten salt bath. Additionally, the methods may include adding a first phosphate salt to the molten salt bath. A lithium phosphate salt that includes at least a portion of the lithium cations may be formed and precipitate from the molten salt bath. Furthermore, the methods may include adding a multivalent salt that includes a multivalent metal cation to the molten salt bath. A second phosphate salt that includes the multivalent metal cation may be formed and precipitate from the molten salt bath.

Salt bath compositions and methods for regenerating salt bath compositions

The methods generally include contacting an alkali-containing glass article having a first alkali metal cation with a molten salt bath including from 0.1 wt. % to 3 wt. % nanoparticles and at least one alkali metal salt having a second alkali metal cation that has an atomic radius larger than an atomic radius of the first alkali metal cation. The nanoparticles may include at least one of metalloid oxide nanoparticles and metal oxide nanoparticles. The methods also include maintaining contact of the glass article with the molten salt bath to allow the first alkali metal cations to be exchanged with the second alkali metal cations of the molten salt bath. Further, the methods may include removing the glass article from contact with the molten salt bath to produce a strengthened glass article. A Surface Hydrolytic Resistance titration volume of the strengthened glass article may be less than 1.5 mL.

Salt bath compositions for strengthening glass articles, methods for using the salt bath compositions to strengthen glass articles, and glass articles strengthened thereby

A textured glass article includes: a body comprising an aluminosilicate glass comprising greater than or equal to 16 wt % AlOand a AlO/SiOratio less than or equal to 0.3, the body having at least a first surface; a plurality of polyhedral surface features extending from the first surface, each of the plurality of polyhedral surface features comprising a base on the first surface, a plurality of facets extending from the first surface, and a surface feature size at the base greater than or equal to 10 μm and less than or equal to 100 μm, wherein the plurality of facets of each polyhedral surface feature converge toward one another; and a transmittance haze greater than or equal to 50%.

Textured glass articles and methods of making same

Embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to salt bath systems for strengthening glass articles including a salt bath tank defining a first interior volume enclosed by at least one sidewall; a salt bath composition including an alkali metal salt positioned within the first interior volume; a containment device defining a second interior volume enclosed by at least one sidewall and including a regeneration medium positioned within the second interior volume; and a circulation device positioned proximate to an inlet of the containment device, wherein the circulation device is operable to circulate the salt bath composition through the containment device. Methods for regenerating a molten salt are also disclosed.

Salt bath systems for strengthening glass articles and methods for regenerating molten salt

A method for inspecting a transparent workpiece comprises: directing light from an illumination source onto a plurality of defects formed in the transparent workpiece, wherein the plurality of defects extends in a defect direction, wherein the transparent workpiece comprises a first surface and a second surface; detecting a scattering image signal from light scattered by the plurality of defects using an imaging system, wherein an imaging axis of the imaging system extends at a non-zero imaging angle relative to the defect direction, wherein entireties of at least a subset of the plurality of defects are within a depth of field of the imaging system; and generating a three-dimensional image of at least one of the plurality of defects based on the scattering signal.

Apparatus and method for inspecting laser defect inside of transparent material

Methods of forming vias in a glass-based article by laser-damage-and-etch processes including etching solutions having positive charge organic molecules are disclosed. In some embodiments, a method of forming a via in a glass-based article includes forming a damage track through a bulk of the glass-based article extending from a first surface of the glass-based article to a second surface of the glass-based article, and applying an etching solution to the glass-based article to form the via. The etching solution includes at least one acid and a positive charge organic molecule. An etch rate at the first surface and the second surface is lower than an etch rate at the damage track.

Methods for etching vias in glass-based articles employing positive charge organic molecules

A textured glass article includes: a body comprising an aluminosilicate glass comprising greater than or equal to 16 wt % AlO, the body having at least a first surface; a plurality of dendritic surface features extending from the first surface, each of the plurality of dendritic surface features comprising a base on the first surface and a surface feature size at the base greater than or equal to 10 μm and less than or equal to 350 μm; and a transmittance haze greater than or equal to 50%.

Deadfront articles that include a tactile element formed on a first surface of a substrate and a visual element disposed on a second surface of the substrate opposite the first surface. The tactile element is positioned on the first surface of the substrate in a complimentary fashion to the visual element disposed on the second surface of the substrate. The tactile element may include a surface roughness portion having a surface roughness different than the surface roughness of an area bordering the surface roughness portion. The deadfront articles may be incorporated into an automobile interior to provide a visual and haptic display interface for a user.

Tactile elements for deadfronted glass and methods of making the same

Glass-based substrates are described herein that may be processed by methods including applying a cover article onto a glass-based substrate, submerging the glass-based substrate in an etchant, and maintaining the submersion of the glass-based substrate in the etchant. The glass-based substrate may include a covered surface portion and an exposed surface portion. At least a portion of the covered surface portion may be in direct contact with the cover article. The covered surface portion may not be in contact with the etchant and the exposed surface portion may be in direct contact with the etchant. The etchant may contact the exposed surface portion and the cover article fora time sufficient to etch the exposed surface portion. The cover article may provide a barrier between the etchant and the covered surface portion for the entirety of the submerging.

Methods for etching glass-based substrates

A textured glass-based article with multiple haze levels is provided. The textured glass-based articles are produced by utilizing a combination of etching and mechanical polishing to produce the multiple haze levels.

A method for increasing the tactile feel of a glass-ceramic article includes (a) performing a first etching of a surface of the glass-ceramic article with a first etchant to create a plurality of features on the surface, wherein the first etchant comprises hydrofluoric acid and an inorganic fluoride salt, and the plurality of features comprises protrusions and recesses and (b) performing a second etching of the surface with a second etchant different from the first etchant to enlarge a distance between adjacent features of a same type, wherein the second etching occurs after the first etching, after the second etching an average distance between adjacent features of a same type is in a range from 0.5 μm to 20 μm and a density of features of the same type is in a range from 9,000 to 25,000 features/mm, and a tactile feel of the surface after the second etching is greater than the tactile feel of the surface before the first etching.
