The present invention provides an ion sensor with which an ion concentration can be stably measured with high accuracy, and a display device. The present invention is an ion sensor that includes a field effect transistor. The ion sensor also includes an ion sensor antenna and a reset device. The ion sensor antenna and the reset device are connected to a gate electrode of the field effect transistor. The reset device is capable of controlling the potential of the gate electrode and the ion sensor antenna to a predetermined potential.

The present invention provides an inexpensive display device that includes an ion sensor portion and a display and that can be miniaturized. The present invention is a display device that includes an ion sensor portion including an ion sensor circuit and a display including a display-driving circuit. The display device has a substrate, and at least one portion of the ion sensor circuit and at least one portion of the display-driving circuit are formed on the same main surface of the substrate.

A display device prevents luminance unevenness that occurs in the case of inversion driving being performed, and performs high quality image display, while selectively scanning two lines of picture elements constituting a single pixel using a single gate wiring, as in the case of multi-primary color image display. The display device includes a display element including a pixel constituted by a plurality of picture elements disposed in two lines in a longitudinal direction and two or more columns in a lateral direction, a gate wiring common to the plurality of picture elements, and a source wiring that is arranged perpendicular or substantially perpendicular to the gate wiring and to perform image display using inversion driving in which an image display signal is provided to the picture elements connected to the gate wiring which is sequentially selected, at a different polarity than a polarity of an immediately previous frame, and an array of the picture elements in the pixel is determined so as to compensate for a change in luminance following the change in the effective value relative to the image display signal of the picture elements belonging to one line.

When viewed from the top of the liquid crystal display panel, a projecting section () of a picture element electrode () is formed so as to at least partially match a contact hole (). It is therefore possible to provide the liquid crystal display panel which achieves a high quality display and has a high aperture ratio and high transmittance.

In one embodiment of the present invention, in an even-numbered signal line group, the arrangement sequence of the first and second signal lines is reversed between in a display area and in a non-display area, and the same goes for the arrangement sequence of the third and fourth signal lines. The ends of the first to sixteenth signal lines in the non-display area are connected to the first to sixteenth individual drivers, respectively. An odd-numbered individual driver and an even-numbered individual driver each output a corresponding one of drive signals of opposite polarity. Thus, the polarities of subpixels of the same color arranged in a first direction D(horizontal direction) differ between the subpixels connected to the odd-numbered signal line group and the subpixels connected to the even-numbered signal line group. That is, all of the subpixels having the same color arranged in the horizontal direction do not have the same polarity. This helps reduce a horizontal shadow.

An active matrix substrate has a structure that prevents a drain extraction line from breaking without a plurality of active elements such as thin film transistor elements, metal-insulator-metal elements, MOS transistor elements, diodes, and varistors being disposed, and is suited for use in a large-size liquid crystal television or a like liquid crystal display device equipped with a large-size liquid crystal display panel. The active matrix substrate includes an active element connected, via a drain extraction line, to a storage capacitor upper electrode, wherein the drain extraction line has at least two routes.

The present invention provides a liquid-crystal display device in which a pixel defect does not occur even when an electrode becomes disconnected. The liquid-crystal display device according to the present invention comprises a liquid crystal layer and a pair of substrates between which the liquid crystal layer is interposed. At least one of the pair of substrates includes an electrode that applies a voltage to the liquid crystal layer. The electrode that applies the voltage to the liquid crystal layer includes two or more linear portions. The substrate comprising the electrode that applies the voltage to the liquid crystal layer, from among the pair of substrates, includes a floating electrode that overlaps at least two of the two or more linear portions via an insulating film.

Disclosed is an MVA type liquid crystal display device (LCDA) forming four domains in which liquid crystal molecules fall in different directions that are about 90&#xb0; apart. The MVA type liquid crystal display device includes a plurality of pixels arranged in a matrix of rows and columns, which pixels are horizontally long pixels having longer sides extending in the row direction. Each pixel includes two first electrodes (and) arranged side by side along the row direction. Preferably, at least one of the two first electrodes (and) has a first corner section including a first edge that is parallel to the row direction and a second edge that is parallel to the column direction, and the first substrate further includes an electrode layer () overlapping at least a portion of the first edge or the second edge of the first corner section. According to the present invention, display quality deterioration caused by disturbed alignment of liquid crystal molecules occurring near the edges of the pixel electrodes can be suppressed.

An array substrate of the present invention includes: an insulating substrate; a plurality of scanning lines on the insulating substrate; a plurality of data lines each disposed so as to intersect the plurality of scanning lines on the insulating substrate; picture element electrodes each formed in a substantially rectangular shape, the picture element electrodes each being connected, via a switching element, to a corresponding scanning line and a corresponding data line, the picture element electrodes each having a long side disposed along a direction in which the plurality of scanning lines are extended and a short side disposed along a direction in which the plurality of data lines are extended, the picture element electrodes each having cut sections formed by cutting two corners of each of the picture element electrodes, the cut sections being formed so as to serve as alignment dividing means. This makes it possible, regarding an MVA liquid crystal display device, to easily ensure a sufficient process yield as well as improving display quality by ensuring a sufficient aperture ratio in each one pixel.

It is possible to decrease block segmentation and flickering due to separate exposure in an active matrix substrate while avoiding decreased aperture ratio, increased parasitic capacity and complication in manufacturing process. A first pixel circuit and a second pixel circuit including a first-type TFT and a second-type TFT, respectively, are disposed alternately relative to each other in both directions of row and column in an active matrix substrate. In the first-type and the second-type TFTs, a pattern misalignment of the drain electrode with respect to the gate electrode in an up-down direction will increase/decrease a gate-drain parasitic capacity Cgd in reverse ways. By disposing these two types of TFTs in uniform dispersion, the increase/decrease in the parasitic capacity Cgd caused by pattern misalignment occurring at the time of manufacture are averaged.

A display device improves brightness while minimizing an increase in the number of source drivers. When a value obtained by dividing the length of a display screen in a row direction by the number of pixels in the row direction is a length corresponding to one pixel in the row direction, one period of color arrangement in the row direction is a length corresponding to two pixels. One such period of color arrangement includes two groups of subpixels that include first subpixels of the light's three primary colors of red (R), green (G) and blue (B), that are arranged in a row and that have the same subpixel configuration; and at least one additional subpixel. Scanning lines extending in the row direction and signal lines extending in the column direction are connected to the first subpixels and the at least one additional subpixel.

A display device that can prevent linear unevenness (uneven line) generated in one direction of a display image and can provide excellent display qualities includes a pixel including sub-pixels of n-colors (where n is an integer of 4 or more), and a signal line arranged to drive sub-pixels, the pixel and the signal line arranged to drive sub-pixels being disposed in a display region. The signal line arranged to drive sub-pixels is disposed on a display region center side of a sub-pixel positioned at least one terminal of the display region. The signal line arranged to drive sub-pixels is not disposed on a non-display region side of the sub-pixel positioned at the at least one terminal. The sub-pixel positioned at the at least one terminal has a color other than a color with the highest luminance of the n-colors.
