A lateral electric field type liquid crystal display (LCD) device comprises a first substrate formed with a plurality of first electrodes and at least one second electrode, a second substrate and a liquid crystal layer disposed between the two substrates. Each first electrode comprises an array of electrode segments and every adjacent first and second electrodes have a minimum spacing smaller than a maximum spacing in between. Each second electrode is a strip electrode or also comprises an array of electrode segments. Each electrode segment is a V-shape electrode rotated with an angle or an electrode segment having at least an extruded portion and at least an intruded portion. The array of electrode segments may be a sinusoidal electrode. The first and second electrodes are oriented in parallel with or at a specific angle with respect to the data line of the lateral electric field type LCD device.

Lateral electric field type liquid crystal display device having non-uniform spacings between two electrodes

An LED-based lighting apparatus includes a plurality of LED-based lighting segments connected in series with a current control device. Each lighting segment has at least one LED-based lighting unit connected in series. A plurality of switch controllers controlled by a switching voltage comparator unit is connected with the plurality of LED-based lighting segments to provide multiple operation modes for turning on different number of LED-based lighting segments. In one embodiment, each switch controller is connected in parallel with a corresponding segment. The switching voltage comparator unit generates a propagation signal that propagates through and controls the plurality of switch controllers. In the other embodiment, each switch controller is connected between a positive end of the corresponding segment and a current control device. The switching voltage comparator unit generates two propagation signals that propagate through and control the plurality of switch controllers.

Apparatus for driving a plurality of segments of LED-based lighting units

A liquid crystal display (LCD) device comprises a first substrate formed with a first electrode, a second substrate formed with a second electrode and a liquid crystal layer disposed between the two substrates. The LCD device includes at least one pixel area having at least one display unit. In the display unit, the first or second electrode is formed with a plurality of elongated apertures arranged in parallel and positioned outwardly one by one from the center of the display unit along at least four different directions. The plurality of elongated apertures forms solid or dotted edges around the circumference of the first or second electrode. The solid or dotted edges of the first electrode may be aligned with or extend outwardly more or less than the solid or dotted edges of the second electrode from the center of the display unit.

Liquid crystal display device having electrodes with elongated apertures

A plurality of LED-based lighting units is segmented into a plurality of LED-based lighting segments connected in series. Each lighting segment has a plurality of LED-based lighting units connected in series with at least a series-connection switch, and a bypass-connection switch is connected in parallel with the series of LED-based lighting units. The total number of LED-based lighting units can be determined by a maximum voltage level of an input voltage supply and the forward voltage of the LED-based lighting unit for achieving optimal efficiency. The number of lighting segments and the number of lighting units in each lighting segment are properly chosen based on the total number of the LED-based lighting units in such away that any number up to the total number of all the LED-based lighting units can be connected in series by respectively controlling the series-connection switch and the bypass-connection switch of each LED-based lighting segment.

Methods and apparatus for segmenting and driving LED-based lighting units

A driving device for quickly changing the gray level of the liquid crystal display and its driving method are disclosed. The driving device includes a group of thin film transistors with matrix array, a plurality of gate lines and a plurality of data lines. The driving method for the thedriving device includes: two gate lines in the liquid crystal display are simultaneously or synchronously turned on according to in the bright period or in the black period, the voltage for displaying the present frame interval data or the voltage for displaying black image is given to the thin film transistors connected with the gate lines, and scanning continues in turn. The present invention is suitable for the picture treatment of various liquid crystal displays, organic light emitting diode (OLED) display or plasma display panel (PDP).

Driving device for quickly changing the gray level of the liquid  crystal display and its driving method

The major characteristics of the present invention lies in that, on one hand, conventional driving or overdriving techniques that do not add significant cost to the display device are used for scanning while, on the other hand, the direct-lit, LED-based backlight is turned off during the pixels' transient period where their grey levels gradually approach or overshoot above the target grey levels so that the residuals of the dynamic images during the transient period are not manifested.

Method for driving display device to hide transient behavior

A display overdrive method applicable to LCD picture process involves having image data containing gray scale presentation range inputted into the display; a corresponding gray scale range being set up based on the time of a frame from the former range to be present on the display; each gray scale code in the former range being corresponded to the that of the latter to drive the display; gamma voltage corresponding to gray scale in the former range being adjusted relatively to those in the latter range for reducing response time of pixels of the display comparatively to the frame time.

A dynamic control method for controlling backlight module of liquid crystal display (LCD) comprises steps of: receiving a frame data which is transferred to the LCD and consists a plurality of raw grayscale level; processing a statistical analysis for distribution of the plurality of raw grayscale level; and transferring a plurality of corrected grayscale level which is resulted from the statistical analysis corresponding to the raw grayscale level to the backlight control unit and a data modification simultaneously, wherein the backlight control unit uses the plurality of corrected grayscale level to modify brightness of backlight module and the data modification uses the plurality of corrected grayscale level to compare with the plurality of raw grayscale level for accurate display performance, so that the electrical power consumption is reduced and image quality is enhanced.

Driving method of liquid crystal display device having dynamic backlight control unit

An overdrive accuracy adjustment device and method for use in a liquid crystal display panel is presented. According to a current grayscale value of a pixel in an awaiting to be displayed image and a previous grayscale value of the corresponding pixel in an already-displayed image, the corresponding overdrive grayscale value is found from a look-up table. In order to more efficiently use the limited storage capacity of the look-up table as well as improve the accuracy of the overdrive, in accordance with the physical characteristics of the liquid crystal display panel in particular (in particular to the grayscale values which often require the overdrive), the gap size between the current grayscale values and/or the gap size between the previous grayscale values may be adjusted in the look-up table, without having to increase the quantity of the overdrive grayscale values stored in the look-up table.

Liquid crystal display overdrive accuracy adjustment device and method

A method to drive a display with grid array pixels is comprised of writing image data containing a range of grayscale code into multiple pixels; at least a time of a pixel row being divided into frame time and black picture time; each code in the grayscale range being mapped to that in and adjusted range to drive the display without changing gamma voltage or with increased gamma voltage of the greatest grayscale code to present the luminance desired; pixel response time being shorter than frame time; and black picture data being written into the pixel row during the black picture time.

Drive method for display of grid array pixels

A double-frame-rate method for reducing the time lapse of a LCD pixel between its two consecutive scans within a frame is provided. The method horizontally partitions the scan lines into (k) non-overlapping regions, each containing m, m, . . . , mscan lines. The method then scans each of the regions twice before continuing to the next region and, as such, completes two passes of scanning of the entire frame. For a pixel in a region (j), the time lapse between the pixel's two consecutive scans during the frame's frame time is (m/n) of the time lapse of conventional double-frame-rate methods.

Method for reducing time lapse of consecutive scan of LCD pixel

The method increases the output frame rate to p/q (p, q are both natural numbers and p&#x3e;q) times of the input frame rate. In a period of time equal to the least common multiple of the input and output frame times, q input frames are output and (p&#x2212;q) transient frames are generated and inserted at appropriate places before or after the q input frames in the output frame sequence so as to enhance the dynamic display effect of the display device.

The object of quickly changing the gray level of the LCD can be accomplished by the different arrangement of the gate lines and the data lines and the different connection of the thin film transistors with the gate lines and the data lines. The driving method includes: two gate lines in the LCD are simultaneously or synchronously turned on according to in the bright, period or in the black, period, the voltage for displaying the present frame interval data or the voltage for displaying black image is given to the thin film transistors connected with the gate lines, and scanning continues in turn.

Driving device for quickly changing the gray level of the liquid crystal display and its driving method

A method for color correction is provided. In this method, a plurality of groups of gray levels and luminance of light source of display device are respectively selected by color measurement system. The selected data of each color light are respectively calculated to obtain fitting functions which can fit the gray level data of each interval. The fitting luminance of the gray levels in interval is obtained by the fitting function and formed into a lookup table. Then in order to correspond a gamma curve of normalized gray data of image to a predetermined target curve, the two gamma curves are first taken to logarithmic calculation and the modified gray signals are obtained from the lookup table, then the modified gray signals are transmitted out for providing the display device to express the gray distribution state. The method for color correction is applicable to various display devices, especially liquid crystal display device.

Method for color correction

A method of increasing image gray-scale response speed comprising the following steps: to divide plural driven gate lines of an LCD into plural areas; to divide the frame interval time relative to the plural areas into plural sub-intervals, and to sequentially activate each first gate line of these areas during a time period of synchronized signals, then to sequentially activate the next gate lines of these areas, the operation is repeated; to apply an advance voltage to at least a gate line to overdrive frames, and to apply an image data voltage to at least a gate line; to repeat the above steps until the end of the entire frame interval time and to enter the next frame interval. The LCD can be fast driven by dividing of time and space. The method suits for treatment of frames of displays of various LCD's and organic light emitting diodes (OLED's).
