A heat dissipation apparatus () includes a fan bracket (), a fan () and a heat sink (). The fan bracket includes a housing (), a support portion () extending from the housing, and a plurality of arm portions () extending from the housing in a direction opposite to the support portion. Each of the arm portions includes an engaging portion () extending outwardly therefrom, engaging with a fastener () to mount the heat dissipation apparatus to a printed circuit board (). At least two arm portions each include a hook () extending inwardly therefrom. The fan is attached to the support portion of the fan bracket. The heat sink is held between the arm portions of the fan bracket with a bottom surface of the heat sink engaging with the hooks.

Heat sink

A cooling device includes a heat sink (), a fan (), and a fan duct () covering the heat sink and fan therein. The heat sink includes a base () defining at least a through hole () at each of two opposite sides thereof. The fan duct comprises a top wall () and two side walls (). A mounting portion () extends outwardly from a bottom of each side wall and has at least a tube () defining a mounting hole () in an outer wall thereof. A plurality of pins () extends through the through holes into the tubes. The pins have retaining rings () abutting against a bottom surface () of the base of the heat sink, and hooks () locked in the mounting holes.

The method includes the steps of: reading a standard temperature Tof a central processing unit (CPU); reading a thermal diode's temperature Tand a system ambient temperature T; comparing Twith a minimum temperature T, such that the fan begins processing the heat of the CPU begins; if T&#x3e;T, increasing pulse-width modulation (PWM) duty cycle of the fan to 100%; if T&#x3c;=T, comparing a critical temperature Twith T; if T&#x3e;T, increasing PWM fan duty cycle to 100%; if T&#x3c;=T, setting the fan duty cycle at 40%; sending the PWM fan duty cycle to a fan speed controller.
