The disclosure relates to systems and methods where an adsorption-based modularized gas storage system is integrated with existing off-network gas distribution pipelines, which can increase the system reliability and robustness for delivering gas. The modularized gas storage system is placed downstream of a natural gas producing well and upstream of a gas-based power plant. The modularized gas storage system can increase the capacity of the overall network, which can allow the pipeline network to absorb the fluctuations in gas demand with little if any need to adjust gas production rate and/or while sacrificing little if any survival time. The storage system can also release the stored gas in the case of an urgent need for gas (e.g., due to a shutdown of a natural gas producing well) to satisfy a desired survival time.

Systems and methods for gas storage

A polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolytic cell assembly, and a method for making the assembly, are provided. An exemplary method includes forming a functionalized zeolite templated carbon (ZTC), including forming a CaX zeolite, depositing carbon in the CaX zeolite using a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process to form a carbon/zeolite composite, treating the carbon/zeolite composite with a solution including hydrofluoric acid to form a ZTC, and treating the ZTC to add catalyst sites, forming the functionalized ZTC. The method further includes incorporating the functionalized ZTC into electrodes, forming a membrane electrode assembly (MEA), and forming the PEM electrolytic cell assembly. The method further includes coupling the PEM electrolytic cell assembly to a heat source.

Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolytic cells using zeolite-templated carbon (ZTC) as electrocatalyst

A method for stimulating hydrogen production from an injection formation. This method includes the steps of providing a well traversing a subsurface into an injection formation containing hydrocarbons. Carbon dioxide, water, steam, and combustion gas are introduced into the injection formation via the well. Further, the injection formation is stimulated using one or more of infrasonic, sonic, and ultrasonic stimulation. The injection formation is monitored via one or more sensors located in the injection formation to determine one or more properties of reactions in the injection formation and the flow back effluent. Flowback operations are conducted to retrieve flowback effluent.

Enhanced CO2 fracking operation

Technical equilibrium can be used to measure a single gas isotherm in a relatively fast and continuous manner rather than, for example, in a batch manner. Further, an expansion vessel can be used for successive desorption a multicomponent gas in combination with determining the composition of the multicomponent gas in combination with a calculation that provides both qualitative and quantitative information about the multicomponent gas. Moreover, a multicomponent gas can be flowed through an adsorbent bed and the and the flow of the multicomponent gas flow is shut off and isolated when equilibrium is reached.

Multifunctional volumetric adsorption test units and methods of using same

A method for stimulating a reservoir includes providing a well traversing a subsurface into a reservoir containing hydrocarbons. Carbon dioxide and steam may be introduced into the reservoir via the well. The reservoir may be stimulated using one or more of infrasonic, acoustic, and ultrasonic stimulation. Seismic analyses may be applied to determine changes in flow characteristics of the reservoir. Monitoring a flow back effluent via one or more sensors located in the well may determine one or more properties of the flow back effluent. The introduction of carbon dioxide and steam, stimulating, and applying seismic may be repeated until a desired property of the flow back effluent is achieved. The method may include introducing hot carbonated water, carbon dioxide, and cold carbonated water into the reservoir via the well.

Low carbon stimulation technology (steam-CO)

A composition includes a carbon dioxide (CO) emulsion including a continuous critical or supercritical COphase and a discontinuous phase including a polyacrylate. A method of making a COemulsion includes providing a first solution of a polyacrylic acid and critical or supercritical CO, providing a second solution of a base and critical or supercritical CO, and mixing the first solution and the second solution such that the polyacrylic acid and the base react to form an emulsion of polyacrylate droplets in critical or supercritical CO. A method of treating a hydrocarbon-bearing formation includes introducing an emulsion including a continuous COphase and a discontinuous phase comprising a polyacrylate into the formation, contacting the emulsion with an aqueous reservoir fluid in the hydrocarbon-bearing formation, and absorbing an amount of the aqueous reservoir fluid into the polyacrylate of the emulsion to provide a dense COemulsion.

Advanced encapsulation for downhole water capture and improved oil recovery

A method for subsurface sequestration of carbon in a subterranean zone includes forming a fluid-filled volume in the subterranean zone by injecting an aqueous into the subterranean zone and injecting a mixture comprising silicate nanoparticles suspended in an acidic solution having a pH of less than 4. Carbon in the form of carbon dioxide is injected into the fluid-filled volume such that a least a portion of the carbon is sequestered by precipitation of carbonate minerals. At least a portion of the carbonate minerals are formed from reaction of metal cations with bicarbonate formed from the carbon dioxide, and least a portion of the metal cations are a product of decomposition of the silicate nanoparticles in the acidic solution.

Sequestration of carbon in subterranean volumes by mineral precipitation

A dispersion of capsules in critical or supercritical carbon dioxide is provided. The capsules include an aqueous solution encapsulated by magnetic covalent organic framework particles. Also provided is a method of making a dispersion of aqueous solution capsules. The method includes providing a medium of critical or supercritical carbon dioxide, introducing the aqueous solution into the critical or supercritical carbon dioxide medium, and introducing a magnetic covalent organic framework particle into the critical or supercritical carbon dioxide medium. Associated methods of using the disclosed dispersions in hydrocarbon-bearing formations are also provided.

Magnetic covalent organic frameworks as stabilizer and marker for subsurface monitoring

A dispersion of capsules in critical or supercritical carbon dioxide is provided. The capsules include an aqueous solution encapsulated by covalent organic framework particles. Also provided is a method of making a dispersion of aqueous solution capsules. The method includes providing a medium of critical or supercritical carbon dioxide, introducing the aqueous solution into the critical or supercritical carbon dioxide medium, and introducing a covalent organic framework particle into the critical or supercritical carbon dioxide medium. Associated methods of using the disclosed dispersions in hydrocarbon-bearing formations are also provided.

Covalent organic frameworks for improved oil recovery

Systems and methods for heat exchange during gas adsorption and desorption cycling, one method including removing heat from an adsorbent material during gas adsorption to the adsorbent material; storing the removed heat for later use during desorption of gas from the adsorbent material; heating the adsorbent material during desorption of gas from the adsorbent material using at least a portion of the removed heat; and recycling heat during the step of heating to prepare a working fluid for the step of removing heat via temperature reduction of the working fluid.

Integrated heat management systems and processes for adsorbed natural gas storage facilities

A downhole monitoring system for continuously measuring in real-time a fluid produced from a reservoir includes a tubing extending into a wellbore, spaced apart packers forming annular seals between the tubing and a wall of the wellbore, isolated compartments formed between the spaced apart packers, each compartment having an opening in the tubing to allow fluid communication from the reservoir to surface equipment, and an ultraviolet spectrometer installed in each compartment. The ultraviolet spectrometer includes an ultra-violet source that excites diamondoids, a photomultiplier to quantify the excited diamondoids, and an electronic circuit that digitizes a response from the photomultiplier and sends the response to the surface of the wellbore. Additionally, a method includes continuously monitoring and in real-time a fluid produced from a reservoir and determining reservoir connectivity and reservoir profiling.

Diamondoids for monitoring and surveillance

Embodiments of the disclosure provide a method and system for sulfur recovery. A Claus tail gas stream is fed to a hydrogenation reactor to produce a hydrogenated gas stream. The hydrogenated gas stream is fed to a quench tower to produce a quenched gas stream. The quenched gas stream is fed to a first stage adsorption vessel of first stage adsorption unit to produce a first outlet gas stream. The first outlet gas stream is fed to a second stage adsorption vessel of a second stage adsorption unit to produce a second byproduct gas stream. The first stage adsorption vessel is regenerated to produce a first byproduct gas stream. The second stage adsorption vessel is regenerated to produce a second outlet gas stream including hydrogen sulfide. Optionally, a portion of the second byproduct gas stream or nitrogen can be fed to the first stage adsorption vessel or the second stage adsorption vessel for regeneration. Optionally, a sales gas can be fed to the second stage adsorption vessel for regeneration. Optionally, vacuum can be applied to the first stage adsorption vessel or the second stage adsorption vessel for regeneration.

Regeneration schemes for a two-stage adsorption process for Claus tail gas treatment

A solid oxide fuel cell assembly (SOFC) and a method for making the SOFC are provided. An exemplary method includes forming a functionalized zeolite templated carbon (ZTC). The functionalized ZTC is formed by forming a CaX zeolite, depositing carbon in the CaX zeolite using a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process to form a carbon/zeolite composite, treating the carbon/zeolite composite with a solution comprising hydrofluoric acid to form a ZTC, and treating the ZTC to add catalyst sites. The functionalized ZTC is incorporated into electrodes by forming a mixture of the functionalized ZTC with a calcined solid oxide electrolyte and calcining the mixture. The method includes forming an electrode assembly, forming the SOFC assembly, and coupling the SOFC assembly to a cooling system.
