A large number of characters may be represented by character codes without undue complication. For example, characters that are already represented by Unicode may be handled pursuant to the Unicode system within one 16-bit code. Characters that are not represented by Unicode may be handled in a second fashion. The characters that are not represented by Unicode may be represented by two 16-bit codes.

A method and apparatus for synchronizing audio and video streams in a video conferencing system is provided. During a video conferencing session, audio and video streams are transmitted from one processing system to a remote processing system, where they are recorded. Because the video stream has a variable frame rate during transmission, extra frames are inserted into the recorded video stream in order to maintain a constant, predetermined frame rate. During playback, synchronization information from the audio stream is provided by an audio playback process to a video playback process in order to synchronize the start of playing the audio and video streams, as well as to repeatedly synchronize the audio and video streams during playback.

A method and system for saving and retrieving a message via a network server using an index page. The message is sent by a call to a user of a media computer. To save the message, the message is converted into a message index page if the user is not available to respond to the call. The message index page is transferred to a storage medium accessible to a network server. To retrieve a message, the message index page is accessed through a network server from a remote location via a network. The message index page is converted from the message. The message is saved due to user unavailability to respond to the call. The saved message is downloaded by way of the network server to the remote location via the network using the message index page.
