The present invention provides a method for analyzing gases such as carbon dioxide, and includes passing a gas stream containing impurities into a gas adsorption means for a length of time at ambient or higher temperatures to adsorb the impurities therein, stopping the flow of the gas stream, and desorbing and analyzing the impurities using a detector.

Gas analysis method

The present invention provides for a method for purifying carbon dioxide. Moisture, sulfur species and other impurities are removed from the carbon dioxide by a series of steps which include adsorption means and reaction means. All the steps are preferably carried out in a single vessel.

The present invention provides for a method and apparatus for purifying carbon dioxide. Sulfur species are efficiently and effectively removed from the carbon dioxide by a series of steps which include heater/heat exchange means, impurity adsorption means and cooling means.

Method of removing impurities from a gas

A process and a metal catalyst are provided for the partial oxidation of hydrocarbons to produce hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The process is conducted by contacting a mixture of a hydrocarbon-containing gas and an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a metal catalyst. The metal catalyst is a transition or noble metal supported on a ceria monolith substrate. Partial oxidation of hydrocarbons can be carried out at low initiation temperatures with high product yields.

A process for the partial oxidation of hydrocarbons, such as methane, to produce hydrogen and carbon monoxide is provided. The process is conducted by contacting a mixture of a hydrocarbon-containing gas and an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a metal catalyst at high gas velocities and low reaction initiation temperatures. The metal catalyst is a transition metal selected from the group of nickel, cobalt, iron, platinum, palladium, iridium, rhenium, ruthenium, rhodium, osmium and combinations thereof supported on a ceria monolith. Less than 3% by volume of carbon dioxide is present in the product gas.

Catalytic partial oxidation of hydrocarbons

The strongly adsorbed component of a gas mixture is produced in enhanced purity and yield by novel PSA cycles. The basic steps of the cycles include an adsorption vessel prepressurization step, a cocurrent nonadsorbed gas production step, a cocurrent purge step with strongly adsorbed gas product and a countercurrent depressurization step which produces the strongly adsorbed gas product that is used in the cocurrent purge step. In addition to the basic steps, a first depressurization equalization step precedes or follows the cocurrent purge step and a corresponding first pressurization equalization step follows the countercurrent depressurization step. The cycle optionally includes one or two depressurization equalization steps before the cocurrent purge step and one or two corresponding pressurization equalization steps after the first pressurization equalization step.

Multiple equalization pressure swing adsorption process

A high pressure purge is incorporated into the cycle of a PSA process designed for the recovery of strongly adsorbed product gas from a gas mixture. The high pressure purge stream is obtained by compressing the low pressure cocurrent purge step that precedes the countercurrent depressurization or evacuation step. The high pressure purge step is included in the cycle following the adsorption step of the process.

High pressure purge pressure swing adsorption process

High purity strongly adsorbed gas, e. g., carbon monoxide, is separated from a gas mixture containing one or more other gas components, e. g., hydrogen carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen and possibly other impurities, by a two-phase pressure swing adsorption process carried out in one or more adsorption vessels arranged in parallel and containing adsorbent which adsorbs the strongly adsorbed gas more readily than the other components of the gas mixture. The process includes two evacuation steps and two or more purge steps.

Two phase pressure swing adsorption process

High purity carbon monoxide is separated from a gas stream containing carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, hydrogen and possibly other impurities by a two-stage pressure swing adsorption process carried out in a series of adsorption vessels containing adsorbent which adsorbs carbon monoxide more readily than other components of the gas stream. The first adsorption vessel in the series is cocurrently purged with nonadsorbed product stream from the second vessel and the purge effluent from the first stage adsorption vessels is reintroduced into the first adsorption vessels as feed gas.

Two stage pressure swing adsorption process

A process for producing hydrogen gas by reacting steam with a gas mixture containing carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and hydrogen to produce a hydrogen-enriched product gas and subjecting the product gas to pressure swing adsorption to produce a high purity hydrogen product and a hydrogen-depleted waste gas is improved by drying, where necessary, part of the gas mixture and subjecting the dry gas mixture to pressure swing adsorption using a carbon monoxide-selective adsorbent to produce a high purity carbon monoxide product gas and a carbon monoxide-depleted waste gas. Where the gas mixture is produced by endothermic reaction, one or both of the hydrogen-depleted waste gas and the carbon monoxide-depleted waste gas can be used as fuel to supply heat for the endothermic reaction.
