A method of drying print agent is disclosed. The method comprises blowing hot air onto an absorbent printable medium that bears water- and/or solvent-based print agent to reduce the viscosity of the print agent and to promote absorption of at least some water and/or solvent in the print agent by the printable medium; and, subsequent to the blowing of hot air, irradiating the printable medium with ultraviolet radiation to dry the unabsorbed portion of print agent on the printable medium. A printer ink drying apparatus and a print apparatus are also disclosed.

Print agent drying apparatus

In example implementations, a system is provided. The system includes at least one fluid ejection apparatus, a heater and an energy source. The at least one fluid ejection apparatus dispenses a de-contented fluid onto a substrate during conveyance of the substrate. The heater is arranged after the at least one fluid ejection apparatus along a substrate conveying path. The heater removes a liquid from the de-contented fluid on the substrate such that the particles of the de-contented fluid remain on the substrate. The energy source is arranged after the heater along the substrate conveying path. The energy source applies energy to the substrate during the conveyance of the substrate to heat the substrate to a temperature that is approximately a melting temperature of the substrate to fuse the particles on the substrate to the substrate.

In one example, a process to solidify a water-based printing fluid printed on a substrate includes flushing nonvolatile solvent in the printing fluid into the substrate with the water in the printing fluid.

The present disclosure is drawn to printing systems. In one example, a printing system can include an inkjet print head and a plasma generator. The inkjet print head can be used to form a printed image on a media substrate. The plasma generator can be positioned with respect to the inkjet print head to treat the printed image after application to the media substrate.

Printing systems

An example of a liquid bonding agent, for a liquid ink including a wax emulsion in an amount less than 1% actives, includes a calcium salt, the wax emulsion, an acetylenic surfactant, a glycol, and a balance of water. The wax emulsion is present in the liquid bonding agent in an amount ranging from greater than 0% actives to about 2% actives. The liquid bonding agent is to be digitally printed with a thermal inkjet printhead on a substrate under the liquid ink.

A photo curable ink composition includes a photo-reactive binder, a water soluble polymeric sensitizer, a water soluble photoinitiator, a colorant, and a balance of water. The water soluble polymeric sensitizer includes a functionalized anthrone moiety, a polyether chain, and an amide linkage or an ether linkage attaching one end of the polyether chain to the functionalized anthrone moiety. The water soluble photoinitiator having a formula (I) of: wherein n is any integer from 1 to 5 and M is a metal with a valence from 1 to 5.

Photo curable ink composition

A fixable, UV curable ink includes an aqueous ink vehicle including water and a co-solvent, a pigment, and a dispersant. A polyurethane polymer dispersion is suspended as droplets within the aqueous ink vehicle. The polyurethane polymer dispersion includes a polyurethane polymer selected from the group consisting of a polyether-based polyurethane, a polyester-based polyurethane, a polycarbonate-based polyurethane, and mixtures thereof. The polyurethane polymer has i) an acid number ranging from 0 mg/g to less than 20 mg/g and ii) a glass transition temperature of less than 0&#xb0; C. A water soluble or water dispersible photoinitiator is present in the fixable, UV curable ink. A base may be included in an amount sufficient to adjust a pH of the UV curable ink so that it ranges from 7.5 to 9.5. An additive may be included and selected from the group consisting of a biocide, a non-ionic surfactant, an anti-kogation agent, a buffer, and combinations thereof.

The present invention is generally directed to treated silica particulates for use in ink-jet media coatings, comprising silica particulates being surface-activated by a surface activating agent; the surface active agent including an aluminum chloride hydrate, and where the silica particulates are also reagent-modified by an organosilane reagent; the organosilane reagent including an amine-containing silane.

An ink set includes a pre-treatment fixing fluid including at least two metal salts and a fixable, ultraviolet (UV) curable ink. The UV curable ink includes an aqueous ink vehicle, a pigment dispersed in the aqueous ink vehicle, and a dispersant. A polyurethane polymer dispersion is suspended as droplets within the aqueous ink vehicle. The polyurethane polymer dispersion includes a polyurethane polymer selected from the group consisting of a polyether-based polyurethane, a polyester-based polyurethane, a polycarbonate-based polyurethane, and mixtures thereof. The polyurethane polymer has i) an acid number ranging from 0 mg/g to less than 20 mg/g and ii) a glass transition temperature of less than 0 C. A water soluble or water dispersible photoinitiator is present in the pre-treatment fixing fluid or in the fixable, UV curable ink.

The present disclosure provides ink sets and related methods mix color gloss uniformity. The ink set can include a black ink with a black pigment having a particle size of about 14 nm to about 16 nm, a DBP absorption of about 80 ml/100 g to about 350 ml/100 g, and a BET surface area of about 160 m/g to about 1600 m/g. The ink set can also include pigmented magenta ink, pigmented cyan ink, and pigmented yellow ink. As a whole, the ink set can have a mix color gloss uniformity of at least 7.

An inkjet ink composition includes: from 0.25 to 6 weight percent colorant; from 7 to 40 weight percent solvent; from 0.05 to 5 weight percent surfactant; and polyurethane binder in an amount of at least 0.5 weight percent of the inkjet ink composition but not more than twice the weight percent of the colorant. The polyurethane binder has a molecular weight from 32 K to 50 K and an acid number from 40 to 45. The polyurethane binder includes polyether polyol, aliphatic isocyanate and an acid group and does not include chain extenders.

The present invention is drawn to a method of treating silica in an aqueous environment. The method can comprise steps of dispersing silica particulates in an aqueous environment to form an aqueous dispersion; reversing the net charge of a surface of the silica particulates from negative to positive using a surface activating agent, thereby forming surface-activated silica particulates dispersed in the water; and contacting the surface-activated silica particulates with organosilane reagents to form reagent-modified and surface-activated silica particulates.

An ink jet recording sheet is provided that delivers a photoparity image when printed with ink jet printer. The recording sheet comprises a two-layer coating. The bottom layer comprises amorphous silica and the top layer comprises spherical colloidal silica. Both silicas are rendered cationic. The recording sheet provides fast dry time, excellent image quality and superior water resistance and handle ability.
