A heat sink fin that has a first substrate. The first substrate includes a first angular dimple and a first micro air channel in fluid communication with the first angular dimple. The first angular dimple includes a first surface that forms an angle relative to a first plane of the first substrate. The first angular dimple includes a first micro diameter hole in fluid communication with the first angular dimple. The heat sink fin also has a second substrate folded against the first substrate. The second substrate includes a second angular dimple and a second micro air channel in fluid communication with the second angular dimple. The second angular dimple includes a second surface that forms an angle relative to a second plane of the second substrate. The second angular dimple includes a second micro diameter hole in fluid communication with the second angular dimple.

Heat sink fin including angular dimples

A process to fabricate a fin for a heat sink includes creating an array of micro diameter holes on a substrate, and then coupling the substrate to a mold. The mold includes angular dimples such that one or more of the micro diameter holes on the substrate come into contact with the angular dimples in the mold, thereby forming an angle between the micro diameter holes and a surface of the substrate. The process further includes placing the substrate onto a plate. The plate includes micro air channels such that the micro air channels are in communication with the micro diameter holes. In another embodiment, two pieces of substrate, each with micro diameter holes and embossed micro air channels are coupled together to form a fin.

Fin fabrication process for entrainment heat sink

Entrainment heat sink devices and methods of forming entrainment heat sink devices are described herein. One or more method embodiments include forming an opening through a first material, forming a dimple having a trapezoidal-cross section in the first material such that the opening is located on a side wall of the trapezoidal cross-section, and attaching the first material to a second material, wherein the first material or the second material has a trench formed therein and the first material is attached to the second material such that the trench is in fluidic communication with the dimple.

A method for detecting a target nucleic acid of a pathogen in a test sample, the method comprising preparing a target nucleic acid detecting reagent and contacting the target nucleic acid detecting reagent with an oligonucleotide microarray. Biosensor membrane and methods related thereto

A micro-fluidic osmotic pump capable of delivering a desired fluid at a predetermined destination comprising an inside fluid reservoir housing a compressible sac, a surrounding compartment having an external surface made up of a semi-permeable membrane and a fluid duct. The inside fluid reservoir houses a compressible sac containing a predetermined amount of a fluid that is desired to be pumped to a predetermined destination. The surrounding compartment holds a desired osmotic agent and its saturated solution in the remaining volume thereof. The surrounding compartment has an outer surface made up of a semi-permeable membrane that allows a predetermined second external fluid to permeate into the surrounding compartment. The fluid duct is substantially housed within the inside fluid reservoir and runs through openings and respectively provided through the inside fluid reservoir and the surrounding compartment.

Microfluidic osmotic pump

Embodiments of the invention relate to an active biochip for nucleic acid analysis. The biochip comprises an inlet for introducing a nucleic acid sample, fluid channels, valves in contact with the fluid channels and pumps in contact with the fluid channels and adapted to generate a carrier gas or move a buffer through a portion of the fluid channels. The biochip also includes one or more hydroxyapatite columns for separating a portion of the nucleic acid sample, buffer reservoirs in contact with the fluid channels and positioned near the pumps, air exits, a waste reservoir and a nucleic acid analysis region.

Active biochip for nucleic acid analysis

The electronic system includes an electronic device and a liquid holding section that is thermally coupled to the electronic device. The electronic system further includes an impermeable section that engages the liquid holding section. The impermeable section includes a channel and a plurality of passages that provide fluid communication between the liquid holding section and the channel. The electronic system further includes (i) a first fluid that flows through the channel in the impermeable section to facilitate heat transfer from the electronic device to the first fluid; and (ii) a second fluid that flows from the liquid holding section through the plurality of passages into the channel when the second fluid boils within the liquid holding section due to heat transfer from the electronic device to the second fluid. In some embodiments, the first and second fluids are different types of substances.

System and method that dissipate heat from an electronic device

The invention provides hydrogel compositions, components, and hydrogel-actuated or mediated devices, and methods for the incorporation of hydrogel microscale components in microscale devices and systems. The methods and devices result in active microvalves that are useful in microfluidic applications, including analyte sensing, in process chemical and fermentation stream monitoring, and drug delivery. In particular, the devices are useful for controlled drug delivery either in response to a pre-determined stimulus or for pulsatile delivery.

Hydrogel compositions, devices, and microscale components

The present invention provides a sensor, such as a biosensor, comprising at least one self-assembled monolayer (SAM) comprising analyte-sensitive groups, such as glucose-sensitive groups, attached to the surface of the outer wall of a carbon nanotube (CNT), such as a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT), by terminal groups, which bind to a thin layer of a metal or metal oxide, which has been deposited on the surface of the outer wall of the nanotube.

Carbon nanotube-based glucose sensor

A nanoparticle having a self assembly monolayer of molecules as a shell on the nanoparticle. The monolayer may include organic molecules working as surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) reporters. Also, the core shell may include at least a receptor, and/or the like, to ensure that a target analyte can be bound for measurement with SERS. The target analyte may be organic, chemical, biological, inorganic, gas, liquid, solid, and so forth.

Core-shell nanoparticles for detection based on SERS

A system for testing and calibrating gas sensors with gas stored in a strip of packets. The strip may be fed into a chamber having a defined volume of air. A packet may be punctured with a mechanism to release one or more gases into the volume of air to result in an air-gas mixture. New air may be moved into the chamber to push the mixture out of the chamber to a sensor for testing and/or calibration. Then another packet may be punctured to release one or more gases into the volume of new air in the chamber for another air-gas mixture. This mixture may be moved out of the chamber, in the same manner as the previous mixture, to another sensor for testing and/or calibration. This procedure may be repeated with additional packets on the strip.

Gas sensor test and calibration system

An analyte detector is disclosed. The analyte detector includes a substrate having a surface, a self-assembled monolayer comprising a plurality of molecules bonded to the surface, the molecules having a structure (I) defined herein, and a liquid crystal layer having a plurality of liquid crystal molecules aligned on a top surface of the self-assembled monolayer. Analyte detector

The present invention relates to an apparatus for testing multiple sample compounds for their biological effect comprising a porous block having substantially planar top and bottom surfaces. The top surface comprises a plurality of cell adhesive regions and cell dis-adhesive regions and the bottom surface provides multiple sites to load the sample compounds. These sites are located opposite from the cell adhesive regions on the top surface of the porous block. In certain embodiments, the invention further comprises at least one dissolvable layer which provides multiple sites to load the sample compounds.
