Compositions including a highly branched alpha-D-glucan or modified forms thereof and a solute compound are described herein. The compositions can provide increased water solubility and/or increased rate of dissolution for the solute compound. The compositions can also provide increased stability for the solute compound. Methods for preparing and using compositions including a solute compound and a highly branched alpha-D-glucan are also described.

Highly branched alpha-D-glucans

Improved method for purifying extracts containing phytoglycogen or certain derivatives thereof which comprises the step of subjecting the extracts to ultrafiltration. Methods for providing a lower viscosity phytoglycogen material by subjecting an extract containing phytoglycogen (or purified phytoglycogen) to beta-amylase treatment. Methods for preparing beta-dextrins or derivatives thereof from phytoglycogens or derivatives thereof.

Extraction, purification, and processing of phytoglycogen

A material comprising a highly branched carbohydrate polymer, a polyalkylene glycol (or polyalkylene oxide) linked to the highly branched carbohydrate polymer, and a hydrophobic or amphiphilic group linked to the highly branched carbohydrate polymer and/or the polyalkylene glycol (or polyalkylene oxide), is described. Methods of making and using the material, as well as a soluble composition that contains the material and a hydrophobic solute compound, are also described.

Vaccine adjuvants

A dendritic emulsifier for forming an oil-in-water emulsion includes an anhydride-modified phytoglycogen or glycogen-type material. A method of preparing an oil-in-water emulsion includes: (a) combining oil, water, and a dendritic emulsifier; and (b) mixing a combination of the oil, water, and dendritic emulsifier. A method of preparing a dendritic emulsifier includes reacting an anhydride with a phytoglycogen or glycogen-type material in solution, thereby forming an anhydride-modified phytoglycogen or glycogen-type material.
