An online concierge system schedules pickers (shoppers) to fulfill orders from users. During periods of peak demand, the system increases compensation to shoppers to encourage more to participate, thereby reducing missed orders. The system determines an optimal multiplier to increase compensation based on predictive models of supply and demand and then applying an optimization algorithm to search different hyperparameters that affect how the models generate the multipliers. The system selects the optimal multipliers for different time periods and locations. The system may further present the multipliers being offered during future time periods and enable users to activate reminder alerts for select periods. The offers may be presented in a ranked list using a model trained to infer likelihoods of the user accepting participation and/or setting a reminder notification.

Embodiments of the disclosed technologies are capable of providing engagement feedback for an online system while maintaining user privacy. Embodiments determine one or more user groups. A user group includes users, and a size of the user group is selected to protect user privacy. A user action is received from a user in a first group. The user action includes an interaction with a piece of content. A group action count is updated for the first group based on the user action. The group action count indicates a number of interactions with the piece of content by any of the users in the first group. An estimated number of unique engagements is calculated based on the group action count and the size of the first group. The estimated number of unique engagements is provided to the online system as the engagement feedback for the piece of content.

Techniques are described for pooling data originating from different entities into a data pool managed by a data pool management system for performing accurate and resource-efficient statistical and other data operations by entities. Techniques further include maintaining rule sets that govern access to the data sets of the data pool. The DPMS uses the rule sets to determine whether a particular data set, on which a particular operation is requested to be performed, qualifies as authorized data for the requesting entity. In an embodiment, the DPMS determines, based on one rule set, that the particular data set does not qualify as authorized data for the particular operation. The DPMS further determines that based on another rule set the particular data set does qualify as authorized data for the particular operation. Based on determining that authorizing rule set overrides the non-authorizing rule set, DPMS proceeds to performing the particular operation using the particular data set.

Techniques for varying content item density are provided. A first minimum gap value is stored that dictates how close two content items of a first type may appear in a content item feed that contains content items of multiple types that includes the first type and a second type. The first minimum gap value is used to place content items in a first set of content item feeds. For each content item feed of the first set of content item feeds, performance data that indicates how well content items of the first type perform in the content item feed is generated. Based on the performance data and the first minimum gap value, a second minimum gap value that is different than the first minimum gap value is generated. The second minimum gap value is used to place content items in a second plurality of content item feeds.

Techniques for accounting for position-specific differences in user interaction while conducting content item selection events are provided. In one technique, a position-specific factor is determined. The position-specific factor may be based on a ratio of an observed interaction and a predicted interaction. Different positions in a content item feed or on a web page may be associated with different position-specific factors. Eventually, multiple content items are identified for presentation on a screen of a computing device. The content items include a first content item for which a predicted interaction rate is calculated and a second content item for which no predicted interaction rate is calculated. An order of the content items is determined based on the position-specific factor. For example, the predicted interaction rate of the first content item is modified based on the position-specific factor. The content items are presented on the screen based on the order.

Machine learning techniques are described for generating recommendations using decision trees. A decision tree is generated based on training data that comprises multiple training instances, each of which comprises a feature value for each of multiple features and a label of a target variable. The multiple features correspond to attributes of multiple content delivery campaigns. Later, feature values of a content delivery campaign are received. The decision tree is traversed using the feature values to generate output. Based on the output, one or more recommendations are identified and the one or more recommendations are presented on a computing device.

Web page optimization systems and methods are disclosed herein. In one implementation, a number of master pages and page layouts used to generate the web pages are defined. A number of channels are then defined to be associated with certain ones of the master pages and the page layouts. User device generating the request, a browser used to generate the request, or other suitable components of a user agent string in a web page request is then identified. A web page is dynamically rendered in response to the identified components of the user agent string using the master page and the page layout associated with a channel identified by such components of the web page request.

Embodiments provide techniques for tracking the lifecycles of client-side browser windows in the context of a web application. In an embodiment, a server component of a web application can receive a notification that an application page in a first window has been unloaded. In response, the server component can associate the first window with an expiration time and add the first window to an expiration list of windows that are potentially inactive. If a request is received by the server component from the first window while the first window is in the expiration list, the server component can identify the first window as active and remove it from the list. If a request is received by the server component from a second window after the expiration time associated with the first window, the server component can identify the first window as inactive and free all resources for the first window.

Techniques for detecting inactive browser windows

Embodiments of the present invention provide techniques for tracking the lifecycles of client-side browser windows in the context of a web application. In one set of embodiments, a server component of a web application can receive a request originating from a client-side browser window, where the request includes a resource locator (e.g., a URL) and a window identifier. In response, the server component can send a script to the window for retrieving the window's actual identifier/name. Based on the actual identifier returned by the script and the window identifier included in the initial request, the server component can determine whether the window is a new window or an existing window and can process the request as appropriate.
