A circuit breaker vents at least some of the arc gases generated during current interruption from an internal cavity containing separable contacts through a terminal recess vent in a wall in the housing into an external terminal recess. The line side main conductor extends through the same wall into the external terminal recess adjacent the vent and into the collar of a terminal assembly. An electrically conductive stand seated on the main conductor electrically connects to the main conductor an external conductor clamped against the stand by a terminal screw threaded through the collar. The stand has a through opening aligned with the terminal recess vent to pass the arc gases through the external terminal recess to atmosphere.

A circuit breaker includes a housing, separable contacts disposed in the housing, a latchable operating mechanism structured to separate the separable contacts, and a magnetic trip mechanism coupled to the latchable operating mechanism. The magnetic trip mechanism includes a plunger assembly support structure and a plunger assembly having a moveable core. The plunger assembly support structure includes a wall having a slot therein. The moveable core rests in the slot. A positioning member has a hook and an opening. The hook engages the wall of the plunger assembly support structure. The moveable core passes through the opening of the positioning member, which retains the moveable core relative to the plunger assembly support structure.

A main valve for an arc chute is formed by a flexible sheet member that is mounted over a gas opening of the arc chamber structure by extensions on arc plates that form guides received in elongated slots in the ends of the flexible sheet member. The force generated by high pressure gas in the arc chamber on the center of the flexible sheet member causes it to bow allowing arc gases to escape laterally as the ends of the flexible sheet member are drawn towards each other. Flaps formed by slits in the flexible sheet member are deflected by lower pressure gas before the flexible sheet member bows outward.

A circuit breaker handle is provided with a curved bearing surface at its pivot point. The handle bearing surface has a substantially constant radius and is connected to the body of the handle with a necked down handle extension. The handle extension has a width that is less than the width of the curved bearing surface at the point of connection between the bearing surface and the necked down region. The handle pivot mates with a corresponding bearing surface on a notch in the side plate that it pivots within. The arc of the curved bearing surface in the side plate is greater than that of the corresponding bearing surface on the handle and captures the handle pivot within the notch in the sideplate, so the handle cannot lift off the bearing surface on the notch as it is moved.

A circuit breaker includes a releasable retaining mechanism for releasably retaining a movable contact arm of the circuit breaker to prevent 'sneak' during movement of the contact arm to the closed position, as well as, to prevent 'bounce' during movement of the contact arm to the open position. The releasable retaining mechanism preferably includes a hook member rigidly secured to the movable contact arm and a retaining spring secured to the operating mechanism of the circuit breaker. The hook member engages the retaining spring when the movable contact arm is in the open position. The releasable retaining mechanism further includes a release finger extending from the operating mechanism adjacent the retaining spring, the release finger being positioned to contact the retaining spring when an operating handle of the circuit breaker is moved to actuate the operating mechanism in order to place the movable contact arm in a closed position. This results in the hook member being released from engagement with the retaining spring, allowing the movable contact arm to be rapidly rotated to the closed position.

A switching mechanism interfaces a flexible shaft to a handle of a circuit interrupter which is rotatable in an arcuate path between an on position and an off position. The switching mechanism includes a handle attachment attached to the handle for rotating the handle between the on position and the off position, and a bracket pivotally mounted to the handle attachment and attached to the flexible shaft for movement thereby. The handle attachment may also extend a length of the handle. The switching mechanism may further include a baseplate for securing the flexible shaft thereto and attached to the circuit interrupter. The bracket may have a generally U-shape, two arms pivotally mounted to the handle attachment, and a base which is attached to the flexible shaft. The handle attachment may be generally U-shaped and have a base and two arms which each are pivotally mounted to one of the two arms of the bracket. The two arms of the bracket may be generally oriented at right angles to the two arms of the handle attachment. The flexible shaft may have a linearly movable rod which moves generally tangential to the arcuate path of the handle and in a plane thereof. The handle attachment may have a clamp for clamping the handle attachment to the handle. The base may include a tab for positioning a length of the handle within the handle attachment. Alternatively, the handle attachment may have a base which is screwed to a hole in the handle.
