A method of automated measurement of motility and morphology parameters of the same single motile sperm. Automated motility and morphology measurements of the same single sperm are performed under different microscope magnifications. The same single motile sperm is automatically positioned and kept inside microscope field of view and in focus after magnification switch. A method of automated non-invasive measurement of sperm morphology parameters under high magnification of imaging. Sperm morphology parameters including subcellular structures are automatically measured without invasive sample staining. A method of automatically selecting sperms with normal motility and morphology and DNA integrity for infertility treatment.

A method discloses topography information extracted from scanning electron microscope (SEM) images to determine the atomic force microscope (AFM) image scanning speed at each sampling point or in each region on a sample. The method includes the processing of SEM images to extract possible topography features and create a feature metric map (step 1), the conversion of the feature metric map into AFM scan speed map (step 2), and performing AFM scan according to the scan speed map (step 3). The method enables AFM scan with higher scan speeds in areas with less topography feature, and lower scan speeds in areas that are rich in topography features.

The present invention relaters to a system and methods for automated vitrification of mammalian oocytes or embryos. The system and methods enable automated processing of oocytes or embryos in vitrification solutions; robotically moving vitrification devices that carry processed cells for freezing in liquid nitrogen; automated sealing of the frozen devices; and transferring the sealed devices to an automated storage system for long-term cryopreservation.

System and methods for automated vitrification of biological materials

MEMS devices fabricated using inexpensive substrate materials such as paper or fabric, are provided. Using paper as a substrate, low cost, simple to prepare, lightweight, disposable piezoresistive sensors, including accelerometers are prepared. Signal-processing circuitry can also be patterned on the substrate material. The sensors can be utilized as two-dimensional sensors, or the paper substrate material can be folded to arrange the sensors in a three dimensional conformation. For example, three sensors can be patterned on a paper substrate and folded into a cube such that the three sensors are orthogonally positioned on the faces of a cube, permitting simultaneous measurement of accelerations along three orthogonal directions (x-y-z). These paper-based sensors can be mass produced by incorporating highly developed technologies for automatic paper cutting, folding, and screen-printing. Also provided are methods of modifying paper for use as a substrate material in MEMS devices.

The present invention relates to modular system for micro-nano manipulation of samples. The modular system of the present invention comprises changeable tool tips which may be provided in an array, and a tool body. Each changeable tool tip comprises an end effector connected to a base having mating structures. The tool body includes an arm having slits having dimensions and being disposed on the arm so as to detachably couple with the mating structures of the tool tip. The slits may include an opening with rounded corners for receiving the mating structures, and tapered side walls for frictionally fitting the mating structures. The present invention relates also to a connection system for connecting a micro-dimensional tool body to a changeable micro-dimensional tool tip and to a manipulation tool for use with changeable tool tips of the present invention.

The present invention relates to systems and methods for automated, computer-controlled, tracking and manipulation of motile specimen. The systems and methods of the present invention are suited for tracking and manipulating sperm, particularly for Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) procedures. The present invention also relates also to devices for holding motile cells, such as sperm, and non-motile cells, such as oocytes. The device of the present invention comprises a sealed chamber having an air outlet, one well for the motile cells, and another well for non-motile cells.

Method for automated sperm manipulation and device for holding sperm and oocytes

An automated cell injection system and method are described, which can perform automatic, reliable, and high-throughput cell injection of foreign genetic materials, proteins, and other compounds. The system and method overcome the problems inherent in traditional manual injection that is characterized by poor reproducibility, human fatigue, and low throughput. The present invention is particularly suited for zebrafish embryo injection but can be readily extended to other biological injection applications such as mouse embryo,embryo, andinjections, capable of facilitating high-throughput genetic research at both academic and industry levels. Micro-nanomanipulation device that is capable of grasping and actively releasing micro or nanometer-sized objects in ambient and vacuum environments as well as methods of manufacturing the devices of the present invention. The micro-nanomanipulation device includes gripping arms, an active release plunger to impact or push objects, and microactuators that actuate the gripping arms and the active release plunger.

The present invention relates to a design and microfabrication method for microgrippers that are capable of grasping micro and nano objects of a large range of sizes and two-axis force sensing capabilities. Gripping motion is produced by one or more electrothermal actuators. Integrated force sensors along x and y directions enable the measurement of gripping forces as well as the forces applied at the end of microgripper arms along the normal direction, both with a resolution down to nanoNewton. The microfabrication method enables monolithic integration of the actuators and the force sensors.

The present invention relates to a compact motorized rotational stage for microscopy applications and control methods for automated sample orientation/rotation. The rotational stage includes a motor, a rotational motion transmission mechanism, and a rotating sample holder for accommodating a holding device such as glass slides/Petri dishes of different sizes. Mouse embryos are used as an example to explain the control methods. A pattern recognition utility was developed for identifying mouse embryo structures. The transformation between the holding device rotational coordinate frame and the translational positioning stage coordinate frame is calibrated during image-based visual servo control. The polar body of an embryo is oriented through purely image-based visual servo control or through coordinate transformation and closed-loop position control.
