A system includes a transmitter configured to transmit data on a first set of frequencies of a plurality of frequencies. The data transmitted on the first set of frequencies is respectively transmitted using a first set of pre-coding matrices from a plurality of pre-coding matrices. The transmitter is configured to transmit data on a second set of frequencies of the plurality of frequencies. The data transmitted on the second set of frequencies is respectively transmitted using the first set of pre-coding matrices. Transmission of data on the second set of frequencies is subsequent to transmission of data the first set of frequencies.

Systems and methods for transmitting using pre-coding with multiple codebooks

A method for communication includes configuring a communication system that includes a transmitter and a receiver with first precoding matrices for mapping up to N data streams onto N transmit antenna ports of the transmitter. Each of at least some of the first precoding matrices are derived from respective second and third precoding matrices. The second and third precoding matrices are configured for mapping data onto respective numbers of transmit antenna ports that are less than N. The data streams are mapped onto the N transmit antenna ports using a precoding scheme based on one of the first precoding matrices. The mapped data streams are transmitted over the N transmit antenna ports from the transmitter to the receiver.

A base station including a plurality of codebooks embodied on a computer readable storage medium. The base station further includes a transceiver configured to i) notify a first receiver of a first codebook of the plurality of codebooks to be used for transmissions between the base station and the first receiver, ii) notify a second receiver of a second codebook of the plurality of codebooks to be used for transmissions between the base station and the second receiver, iii) receive, from the first receiver, a first precoding vector from the set of precoding vectors in the first codebook, iv) receive, from the second receiver, a second precoding vector from the set of precoding vectors in the second codebook, v) transmit, in accordance with the first precoding vector, first data to the first receiver, and vi) transmit, in accordance with the second precoding vector, second data to the second receiver.

Precoding with multi-user codebooks

A method for signal processing in a receiver includes receiving in the receiver a Multi-User Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MU-MIMO) signal. The MU-MIMO signal includes at least a first signal, which is precoded using a first precoding scheme and is addressed to the receiver, and a second signal, which is precoded using a second precoding scheme. An average error rate achievable in decoding the first signal in the presence of the second signal is computed. The average error rate is computed over a set of possible choices of the second precoding scheme. The first precoding scheme is selected from among a plurality of available precoding schemes so as to satisfy a criterion defined over the average error rate. The receiver sends feedback to a transmitter transmitting the first signal. The feedback depends on the selected first precoding scheme and causes the transmitter to control transmission of the first signal.

Feedback strategies for multi-user MIMO communication systems

A method includes configuring a transmitter and a receiver with first precoding matrices for mapping onto N transmit antenna ports of the transmitter R1&#x2266;N data streams. Each first precoding matrix is derived from respective second and third precoding matrices, which are configured for mapping onto respective numbers of antenna ports that are less than N. A set of precoding matrices is defined for mapping r&#x3c;R1 data streams onto the transmit antenna ports. Each matrix in the set includes a subset of columns of a given matrix selected from the first precoding matrices. A candidate matrix is included in the set when the candidate matrix cannot be expressed as a weighted permutation of the columns of another matrix in the set. The data streams are mapped onto the transmit antenna ports using a precoding scheme based on one of the first precoding matrices.

A cellular system utilizes different codebooks of precoding vectors for different receivers within a particular cell. A set of different codebooks is designed and then used by a base station as a basis to allocate to various receivers in a dynamic fashion. In at least some embodiments, the codebooks are designed to be non-overlapping in angular space. For example, codebooks can be designed to be generally orthogonal to one another thereby increasing the separation between receivers that use the different codebooks. In at least some embodiments, codebooks can be allocated responsive to a determination that two or more receivers are geographically proximate one another in a manner which would permit an undesirable amount of interference. In yet other embodiments, codebooks can be allocated in a more random fashion.
