Compounds having the general structural formula (I) wherein X can be any element or compound that can form a coordination complex with phthalocyanine and wherein R1; R2, R3 and R4 are independently anionic moieties, or (II) wherein R1; R2, R3 and R4 are independently anionic moieties, are useful in the potentiation of antibiotic activity, and/or in inhibiting or delaying the development of resistance to antibiotics. R1; R2, R3 and R4 may be &#x2014;S03-. The compounds may be administered to a subject in conjunction with an antibiotic. The antibiotic may be an activator of the SOS response, and may be a DNA gyrase inhibitor or a topoisomerase inhibitor. Compositions and dosage forms comprising the compounds are provided.
