The present invention is directed to an electrophoretic display device comprising microcells filled with an electrophoretic fluid and a dielectric layer, which comprises a first type of magnetic filler material, a second type of nonmagnetic filler material, and a polymeric material. The first and second types of filler material physically interact with each other and they are fixed and aligned in the dielectric adhesive layer in a direction perpendicular to a plane of the dielectric layer. The dielectric layer exhibits anisotropic conductivity having higher conductivity in the z direction compared to the other two orthogonal directions.

The present invention provides a solution for a highlight or multicolor display device, in which each display cell can display high quality color states. More specifically, an electrophoretic fluid is provided which comprises three types of pigment particles, having different levels of size, threshold voltage or charge intensity.

The present invention is directed to an electrophoretic display device comprising an electrophoretic fluid which fluid comprises two type of charged particles dispersed in a solvent, wherein the two types of charged particles are of the same color, but carrying opposite charge polarities.

The present invention is directed to an embossing tool having a microstructure on its surface wherein the surface of the embossing tool has a thin layer of gold or an alloy thereof. Such an embossing tool not only can reduce adhesion between the surface of the embossing tool and a cured material, but also does not cause any significant change to the profile of the microstructure.

The present invention is directed to a display fluid comprising charged composite pigment particles dispersed in a solvent. The composite pigment particles have a density which matches to the density of the solvent in which they are dispersed. A display fluid comprising the composite pigment particles provides improved display performance.

The present invention is directed to an electrophoretic fluid which comprises additive particles. The concentration of the additive particles in the electrophoretic fluid is 2.5% to 25% by weight and the additive particles are not seen at the viewing side during operation of the display. The present invention provides a reflective color display device which can display multiple color states, without the disadvantages associated with previously known color display devices. The display fluid of the present invention comprises (a) black and white electrophoretic particles which are oppositely charged and (b) charged color-generating particles having photonic crystal characteristics, all of which are dispersed in a solvent or solvent mixture.

The present invention is directed to methods of making an electrophoretic dispersion comprising pigment particles dispersed in a solvent or solvent mixture, wherein said pigment particles comprises at least one polymer chain comprising a terminal thiocarbonylthio group, attached to the particle surface. The present invention is directed to an electrophoretic dispersion comprising charged pigment particles dispersed in a solvent or solvent mixture, wherein at least one type of the charged pigment particles has an aggregation size about 2 to about 10 times their primary size and/or has a PDI in the range of 0.1 to 0.3. The electrophoretic dispersion of the present invention is capable of improving both image bistability and contrast ratio through adjusting the size distribution of the charged pigment particles.

The present invention is directed to a color display device in which each pixel can display at least five high-quality color states, and an electrophoretic fluid for such an electrophoretic display. In one aspect, the different types of particles exhibit different levels of attraction force to display different color states. In another aspect, the different types of particles exhibit different levels of mobility in different driving voltage ranges to display different color states.

The present invention is directed to an electrophoretic display film which can be controlled to malfunction permanently within a period of time. It provides an elegant method to utilize an electrophoretic film for anti-counterfeit purposes. The concept involves the removal of strong barrier layer(s) from the film to allow the solvent in the electrophoretic fluid within the film to evaporate through weak barrier layer(s), and within a period of time, the performance of the display film will be significantly degraded and the film cannot be re-used.
