An energy storage device for providing electrical energy to a refrigeration unit arranged to cool a container, the refrigeration unit including a condenser and an evaporator configured to cool air entering the container, the energy storage device including a casing; a battery disposed in the casing; and an evaporator subsystem including: a supply refrigerant tube configured to supply refrigerant from downstream of the condenser of the refrigeration unit; an expansion device arranged to receive condensed refrigerant from the supply refrigerant tube; a heat exchanger arranged to receive and evaporate refrigerant from the expansion device; a return refrigerant tube configured to return refrigerant from the heat exchanger to downstream of the evaporator of the refrigeration unit; wherein the evaporator subsystem includes an evaporator fan assembly constructed and arranged to flow air through the heat exchanger and into the casing about the battery.

Transport refrigeration system

An engineless transport refrigeration unit includes a direct current compressor motor, condenser fan motor, evaporator fan motor, an energy storage device, and a generator. The energy storage device is configured to provide direct current electric power to the compressor motor the condenser fan motor, and the evaporator fan motor. The energy storage device is configured to provide power within a range of two hundred volts to six hundred volts. The compressor motor is configured to operate at a direct current voltage range of two hundred to six hundred volts.

Engineless transport refrigeration unit

A transport refrigeration unit (TRU) system is provided. The TRU system includes a TRU and an energy storage device (ESD). The TRU includes components () configured to control an environment in a compartment interior and a TRU controller () configured to control the components () in accordance with initial control settings and to monitor energy usage by the components () being controlled in accordance with the initial control settings. The ESD () includes an ESD controller () receptive of data reflective of the monitored energy usage by the components () from the TRU controller () and configured to determine whether the energy usage is above a threshold. In an event the energy usage is above the threshold, the ESD controller () is further configured to identify operational changes for one or more of the components () to reduce the energy usage and override the initial control settings of the one or more of the components () with new control settings.

Energy control for a transport refrigeration unit with an energy storage device

A transport refrigeration system () includes a transport refrigeration unit (), an energy storage device (), a supply refrigerant tube (), a return refrigerant tube () and at least one electrical pathway (). The transport refrigeration unit is adapted to cool a container. The energy storage device is adapted to provide electrical energy for operating the transport refrigeration unit. The supply refrigerant tube flows a refrigerant from the transport refrigeration unit to the energy storage device, and the return refrigerant tube flows the refrigerant from the energy storage device back to the transport refrigeration unit to cool the battery in the energy storage device (). The electrical pathway extends between the transport refrigeration unit and the energy storage device, and supplies at least electrical energy to the transport refrigeration unit.

A shipping container is provided and includes a structural frame defining an interior, a transport refrigeration unit (TRU) and a control system. The TRU includes an inlet through which air is drawn from a lower region of the interior, a refrigeration unit configured to cool the air drawn from the lower region of the interior through the inlet and an outlet through which air cooled by the refrigeration unit is exhausted toward an upper region of the interior. The control system is configured to control an exhaustion of the air cooled by the refrigeration unit toward the upper region of the interior to maintain a predefined environmental condition within the interior.

Smart airflow distribution system

A transport refrigeration unit (TRU) system is provided and includes a TRU and an energy storage device (ESD). The TRU includes components which are configured to control an environment and a TRU controller configured to control the components in accordance with component operating settings. The ESD includes an ESD controller receptive of identification data identifying the components, current condition data reflective of current conditions and control data reflective of a temperature profile. The ESD controller is configured to determine the component operating settings in accordance with the identification, current condition and control data and to issue the component operating settings to the TRU controller.

Transport refrigeration unit control with an energy storage device

A method and system to control a refrigeration unit () in response to a cargo load () in a refrigerated container includes providing a plurality of sensors disposed within the refrigerated container, providing a cargo load temperature range and a cargo load excursion time limit corresponding to the cargo load, receiving a plurality of temperature readings corresponding to the cargo load via the plurality of sensors, operating the refrigeration unit in a power saving mode in response to the plurality of temperature readings within the cargo load temperature range, and operating the refrigeration unit in a standard mode in response to the plurality of temperature readings outside the cargo load temperature range for longer than the cargo load excursion time limit.

Controlling a refrigeration unit in response to a specific cargo load

An engineless transport refrigeration unit includes a compressor constructed and arranged to compress a refrigerant, and a compressor motor configured to drive the compressor and operate at a voltage range of two hundred (200) to six hundred (600) volts. A battery of the engineless transport refrigeration unit provides the power to the compressor motor.

A cooling unit () for a vehicle () is provided. The cooling unit includes a compressor () electrically connected to a power module (), a condenser () operably connected to the compressor, an evaporator () operably connected to the compressor and the condenser, the evaporator configured to cool ambient air (), and at least one flexible duct () configured to fluidly connect the evaporator with a cargo held in a cargo space of the vehicle.

Flexible cooling system for vehicles

Systems and methods for checking proper airflow within a container () having a refrigeration unit () are provided. The system includes one or more sensors () located within the container configured to measure at least one airflow characteristic, and a controller () in communication with the one or more sensors. The controller is configured to store predetermined information related to airflow within the container, wherein the predetermined information includes minimum airflow criteria related to the at least one airflow characteristic, receive data from the one or more sensors, compare the received data with the predetermined information, and provide an indicator when the comparison indicates that the received data does not meet or exceed the minimum airflow criteria.

Methods and systems for checking proper airflow within a container

A method and system for use with a volume containing a cargo having a thermal mass includes, at least one temperature sensor associated with the cargo to provide at least one temperature associated with the thermal mass, a refrigeration unit associated with the volume, and a controller to control the refrigeration unit in response to the at least one temperature associated with the thermal mass and a temperature set point, wherein the controller models a temperature characteristic of the thermal mass.

Embedded cargo sensors for a refrigeration system

A carbon dioxide refrigerant vapor compression system and method of operating that system are provided. The refrigerant vapor compression system includes a compression device, a flash tank receiver disposed in the refrigerant circuit intermediate a refrigerant heat rejection heat exchanger and a refrigerant heat absorption heat exchanger, and a compressor unload circuit including a refrigerant line establishing refrigerant flow communication between an intermediate pressure stage of the compression device and the refrigerant circuit at a location downstream of the refrigerant heat absorption heat exchanger and upstream of a suction inlet to the compression device, and a unload circuit flow control device disposed in said unload circuit refrigerant line. In response to at least one system operating parameter sensed by at least one sensor, the controller selectively positions the unload flow control device to maintain the refrigerant vapor compression system operating below a preselected high pressure limit.

Carbon dioxide refrigerant vapor compression system

A transport refrigeration unit controls temperature within a transport refrigeration unit using a remote sensor or sensors. The transport refrigeration unit monitors cargo temperature with remote sensor(s) and air temperature to adjust air delivery speed or cooling capacity. Selected operation parameters are determined with consideration of both energy conservation and/or cargo quality. The transport refrigeration unit controls temperature using a first selected mode of operation or a second mode of operation.

Transport refrigeration system, transport refrigeration unit, and methods for same

A controller for controlling a refrigeration unit, a method, and a refrigeration system are disclosed. In an illustrative embodiment, a controller stores instructions for a first refrigeration setting and a second refrigeration setting, tracks a cumulative average temperature in a refrigeration element, and activates either the first refrigeration setting or the second refrigeration setting. The first refrigeration setting has a lower average power consumption and a higher range of temperature variation than the second refrigeration setting. The controller activates the first refrigeration setting until the cumulative average temperature goes outside a selected temperature range; then the controller activates the second refrigeration setting until the cumulative average temperature is within a target temperature range that has a lower threshold that is greater than the lower threshold of the selected temperature range and an upper threshold that is less than the upper threshold of the selected temperature range.
