A cryogenic valve includes a first port and a second port, a valve body, a valve stem, a sealing member, a valve element and a housing. The valve body includes a valve seat defining a fluid orifice in fluid communication with the first port. The valve stem is configured to engage with the valve body, wherein at least one of the valve stem and valve body form an inner valve cavity. The valve element is positioned within the inner valve cavity. The valve element is also configured to bias the sealing member against the orifice to substantially block flow through the orifice and the first port. The bias is controlled in response to control of the valve element by a valve actuator. A channel is configured to allow fluid flow through at least one of the valve stem and valve element along a longitudinal axis. A housing is configured to substantially seal and enclose at least a portion of the valve body and valve stem. The housing forms an inner housing cavity configured to thermally isolate the exterior of the valve body and valve stem from the housing.

RF feedthroughs for use with monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMIC) are installed in environmentally protective or hermetically sealed packages that provide electromagnetic shielding. A feedthrough for an MMIC package has a dielectric substrate, a microstrip or transmission line formed on the substrate for transmitting high frequency electronic signals and a wall disposed above the transmission line and the substrate. The wall of the feedthrough has a varying thickness so that the narrowest portion of the wall is disposed on the transmission line substantially perpendicular to the substrate. The transmission line also has a varying width so that the narrowest width portion of the transmission line crosses the narrowest portion of the wall. The narrowest portion of the wall may be created by placing two oppositely facing concaved surfaces on each side of the wall. To reduce parasitic capacitance, the substrate and the wall may each have an air cavity embedded in respective bodies.

Automated drug discovery protocols, or partially automated protocols, in which matrices with memories serve as the platform on which all manipulations are performed or serve as the repository of information that is transferred to other memories as the synthesized compounds are processed and screened. Also provided are automated drug discovery units for use in the protocols. The units provide a means for seamless data tracking and include instrumentation and vials with memories for information transfer to other memories in a unit. The units, which are provided herein, include some or all of the following: an automated or manual sorter, microvessels, which contain memories, an automated or semi-automated synthesizer, a microvessel washer/dryer, a manual or automated cleaver for removing compounds from the matrix with memory microvessels, and associated software. The memories may be any of any type, including electromagnetically encodable memories and optical memories, or combinations thereof. The memories may be pre-encoded or may be encodabie during, after or before processing. Also provided are manual and automated methods for sorting matrices with memories.

A hermetically sealed package assembly for microwave circuits in the high microwave frequencies having a dielectric gap defined in the substrate. The package assembly comprises a substrate for carrying the circuit on a top surface, a seal ring wall carried on the top surface, a via structure provided through the substrate for transmitting high-frequency signals into and out of the package, and a conducive lead carried on the bottom surface of the substrate and passes under the seal ring wall. A dielectric gap is provided in the substrate between the seal ring wall and the lead to reduce the capacitive coupling between the lead and the wall. The gap may be a sealed cavity provided inside the substrate, or a cutout area in the substrate so that the lead is suspended in air at the location where it passes under the seal ring wall.

Matrices with memories in automated drug discovery and units therefor

Combinations, called matrices with memories, of matrix materials that are encoded with an optically readable code are provided. The matrix materials are those that are used in as supports in solid phase chemical and biochemical syntheses, immunoassays and hybridization reactions. The matrix materials may additionally include fluophors or other luminescent moieties to produce luminescing matrices with memories. The memories include electronic and optical storage media and also include optical memories, such as bar codes and other machine-readable codes. By virtue of this combination, molecules and biological particles, such as phage and viral particles and cells, that are in proximity or in physical contact with the matrix combination can be labeled by programming the memory with identifying information and can be identified by retrieving the stored information. Combinations of matrix materials, memories, and linked molecules and biological materials are also provided. The combinations have a multiplicity of applications, including combinatorial chemistry, isolation and purification of target macromolecules, capture and detection of macromolecules for analytical purposes, selective removal of contaminants, enzymatic catalysis, cell sorting, drug delivery, chemical modification and other uses. Methods for tagging molecules, biological particles and matrix support materials, immunoassays, receptor binding assays, scintillation proximity assays, non-radioactive proximity assays, and other methods are also provided.
