There is provided a network device disposed at an interface between an access segment and an interconnecting layer of a data center. The network device includes an address cache and an address resolution processor configured to receive an address request addressed to virtual machines in a transmission domain of the network device. The address request requesting a layer 2 address of a target virtual machine in the data center, and specifying a layer 3 address of the target virtual machine. In response to receiving a reply, the network device updates the address cache to include an entry specifying the layer 2 address of an edge device of an access segment which has the target virtual machine having a respective layer 3 address corresponding to the specified layer 3 address.

Scaling address resolution for massive data centers

A visibility infrastructure network or monitoring a switching network is disclosed. There are included a plurality of network infrastructure visibility elements implementing forwarding hardware for forwarding packets to monitoring tools. There is also included an abstracted operating system shared by said plurality of network infrastructure visibility elements. There are further included at least one application executing on said abstracted operating system and a common logical architecture having common protocols for enabling the plurality of network infrastructure visibility elements and the applications to communicate with the abstracted operating system.

A network device includes a packet ingress configured to receive packets from a network, and a packet processor configured to identify a first packet of the received packets as a double VLAN tagged packet with an extended priority profile. The packet processor is also configured to determine, based on P bits distributed among M bits of a first priority field associated with a first VLAN tag and N bits of a second priority field associated with a second VLAN tag, the extended priority profile of the first packet from among a group of possible extended priority profiles that is larger than a first group of possible priority profiles associated with the first priority field and larger than a second group of possible priority profiles associated with the second priority field. The packet processor is also configured to process the first packet according to the determined extended priority profile.

Extended priority for Ethernet packets

A network device includes a packet ingress configured to receive packets from a network, and a packet processor. The packet processor is configured to identify a first packet of the received packets as a double VLAN tagged packet including a first priority field associated with a first VLAN tag and a second priority field associated with a second VLAN tag. The packet processor is also configured to assign an extended priority profile to the first packet based on one or more bits of the first priority field and one or more bits of the second priority field, the extended priority profile being among a group of possible extended priority profiles that is larger than any group of possible priority profiles associated with a single VLAN tag of the first packet. The packet processor is further configured to process the first packet according to the assigned extended priority profile.

There is provided a network device disposed at an interface between an access segment and an interconnecting layer of a data center. The network device includes an address resolution processor configured to receive an address request addressed to virtual machines in a transmission domain of the network device. The address request specifying a source layeraddress, requesting a layeraddress of a target virtual machine in the data center, and specifying a layeraddress of the target virtual machine. The network device is further configured to transmit a local message over the first access segment requesting the respective layeraddress of a virtual machine which has the specified layeraddress. In response to receiving a reply, the network device transmits a message to the specified source layeraddress to provide the layeraddress of the network device and the specified layeraddress.

Aspects of the disclosure can provide a network switch having reduced power consumption. The network switch can include a plurality of ports that are configured to receive and transmit network traffic. The plurality of ports can be configured in a power-on mode and a power-off mode. Further, at least a first port among the plurality of ports can be configured to remain in the power-on mode and to receive power control instructions. In addition, the network switch can include a power controller. The power controller can change the power modes of selected ports among the plurality of ports in response to the power control instructions received through the first port.

Method and apparatus for power reduction in network

An embodiment of a network device includes a plurality of switch cores and a plurality of ports for receiving and transmitting data frames on a network disposed on a single integrated circuit, where switch core is coupled to a subset of the plurality of ports. The network device includes a deactivator configured to selectively deactivate at least a portion of one or more switch cores among the plurality of switch cores on the single integrated circuit, and the network device is configured to forward data frames among the plurality of ports based on a configuration of active portions of the plurality of switch cores. The deactivated portions may include ingress processing pipelines, egress processing pipelines, and/or entire switch cores. The portions of the switch cores to be deactivated may be dynamically be determined based on connectors of the integrated circuit.

Multiple core network device with core redundancy

Aspects of the disclosure provide a method for reducing power consumption in a network switch. The method includes detecting a traffic load on a network link system coupled to the network switch. The network switch can include a first power consumption configuration providing a first link capacity for the network link system, and a second power consumption configuration, which is lower than the first power consumption configuration, providing a second link capacity that is lower than the first link capacity. The method further includes determining whether the traffic load on the network link is lower than a first boundary threshold, and reconfiguring the network switch from the first power consumption configuration into the second power consumption configuration if the traffic load is lower than the first boundary threshold.
