Disclosed is a display device for a vehicle interior system. The display device includes a display module having a glass substrate, an organic light emitting diode (OLED) display, and a support member. The glass substrate has a first major surface and a second major surface opposite to the first major surface. The OLED display is disposed on the second major surface of the glass substrate, and the support member includes a first support surface and a second support surface opposite to the first support surface. The OLED display is disposed on the first support surface. The display device also includes a mounting element disposed on the second support surface of the support member. The support member and the mounting element have respective first and second stiffnesses. The first stiffness is at least 100 N/mm, and an effective stiffness of the first and stiffnesses is no more than 270 N/mm.

Foldable apparatus comprise a foldable substrate foldable about an axis and a substrate thickness defined between a first major surface and a second major surface. The foldable substrate comprises a central portion positioned between a first portion and a second portion. The first portion comprising a substrate thickness. The central portion comprises a central thickness that is less than the substrate thickness. In some embodiments, a width of central portion is about 45 millimeters or less. Methods of making a foldable apparatus comprise forming a recess in a first major surface of the foldable substrate. In some embodiments, methods comprise chemically strengthening the foldable substrate.

In some embodiments, methods of processing a ribbon can comprise masking the first portion, masking the second portion, and chemically strengthening the central portion.

A hinged glass article includes wings including glass and a hinge positioned between the wings. The wings fold about the hinge. The hinge includes a glass portion integrally joined to the wings and a polymer portion overlaying the glass portion. The glass portion of the hinge includes a first surface facing away from a second surface thereof. The polymer portion overlays the first surface. The glass portion of the hinge is asymmetric (with the wings unfolded) such that halves of the glass portion of the hinge do not mirror one another about a lengthwise middle of the hinge. Also, the first surface of the glass portion of the hinge is free of small inclusions impinging thereupon that have a linear cross-sectional dimension extending fully thereacross and through a center thereof greater than 2 μm and less than 30 μm.

Hinged glass article

Articles including a substrate, a cover glass layer disposed over a top surface of the substrate, and an adhesive layer having a dynamic elastic modulus disposed between a bottom surface of the cover glass layer and the top surface of the substrate. The cover glass layer may have a thickness in the range of 1 micron to 200 microns. The dynamic elastic modulus of the adhesive layer may include a first elastic modulus in the range of 10 kPa to 1000 kPa measured at a stress frequency in the range of 0 Hertz to 5 Hertz and a temperature of 23 degrees C., and a second elastic modulus of 500 MPa or more measured at a stress frequency in the range of 10 Hertz to 1000 Hertz and a temperature of 23 degrees C. The adhesive layer may be optically transparent. The articles may be bendable electronic display devices or bendable electronic display device modules.

A cold-formed glass laminate () may include a first ply () of 3D formed glass with a first thickness, a first strength, and a first coefficient of thermal expansion. The laminate () may also include a second ply () of 3D formed glass with a second thickness less than the first thickness, a second strength greater than the first strength, and a second coefficient of thermal expansion. The second coefficient of thermal expansion may be selected to be sufficiently higher than the first coefficient of thermal expansion to induce residual compressive stresses in the first ply () due to cold forming therewith. An adhesive layer () may be arranged between the first ply () and the second ply ().

Edge strength using CTE mismatch

A cold-formed glass laminate may include a first ply of 3D formed glass with a first thickness and a first strength. The first ply may include pre-formed residual compressive stresses in a peripheral edge portion adapted to offset tensile stresses resulting from a cold-forming process. The laminate may also include a second ply of 3D formed glass with a second thickness less than the first thickness and a second strength greater than the first strength. An adhesive may be arranged between the first ply and the second ply and post-formed residual stresses in the peripheral edge portion of the first ply of the laminate may remain compressive. A method of forming a glass laminate with compressive edge stresses is also described.

Edge stress using differential cooling

An article including a laminate having a substrate and an ultra-thin cover glass layer bonded to atop surface of the substrate. The ultra-thin cover glass layer has a thickness in the range of 1 micron to 49 microns. The ultra-thin cover glass layer is bonded to the top surface of the substrate with an optically transparent adhesive layer having a thickness in the range of 5 microns to 50 microns.

Articles and methods related to the cold-forming of glass laminate articles utilizing stress prediction analysis are provided. A cold-forming estimator (CFE) value that is related to the stress experienced by a glass sheet of a glass laminate during cold-forming is calculated based on a plurality of geometric parameters of glass layer(s) of a glass laminate article. The calculated CFE value is compared to a cold-forming threshold related to the probability that defects are formed in the complexly curved glass laminate article during cold-forming. Cold-formed glass laminate articles are also provided having geometric parameters such that the CFE value is below the cold-forming threshold.

Cold-formability of glass laminate article utilizing stress prediction analysis and related methods

A foldable electronic device module includes: a glass-containing cover element having a thickness from about (25) &#x3bc;m to about (200) &#x3bc;m, an elastic modulus from about (20) to (140) GPa, and first and second primary surfaces; a stack comprising: (a) an interlayer having an elastic modulus from about (0.01) to (10) GPa and a thickness from about 50 to (200) &#x3bc;m, and (b) a flexible substrate having a thickness from about (100) to (200) &#x3bc;m; and a first adhesive joining the stack to the cover element, and comprising an elastic modulus from about (0.001) to (10) GPa and a thickness from about (5) to (25) &#x3bc;m. Further, the module comprises an impact resistance characterized by tensile stresses of less than about (4100) MPa and less than about (8300) MPa at the first and second primary surfaces of the cover element, respectively, upon an impact in a Pen Drop Test.

Foldable electronic device modules with impact and bend resistance

A glass article having a first glass layer, a second glass layer disposed adjacent to the first glass layer, and an interface slidably coupling the first glass layer to the second glass layer. The interface has a thickness of from 2 nm to 500 nm. The glass article is characterized by: (a) an absence of failure when the article is held at a parallel plate separation distance of 10 mm for 60 minutes at 25&#xb0; C. and 50% relative humidity; (b) a puncture resistance of greater than about 6 kgf when the second glass layer is supported by (i) a 50 &#x3bc;m thick pressure-sensitive adhesive having an elastic modulus of less than 1 GPa and (ii) an approximately 100 &#x3bc;m thick polyethylene terephthalate layer having an elastic modulus of less than 10 GPa, and the first glass layer is loaded with a tungsten carbide ball having a 1 mm diameter.

Layered bendable puncture resistant glass article and method of making

The apparatus for non-contact damping vibration of a vibrating optical fiber moving over an optical fiber path includes an air bearing and an air supply. The air bearing includes a body having an aperture defined by an inner surface and a central axis that passes through the center of the aperture and along which lies the optical fiber path. A plurality of nozzles is distributed around the inner surface and directed toward the central axis. An air conduit within the body is in pneumatic communication with the plurality of nozzles. The air supply is pneumatically connected to the air conduit and is configured to supply pressurized air to the air bearing. The pressurized air is directed through the nozzles to the vibrating optical fiber and impinges on the optical fiber to damp the vibration of the vibrating optical fiber.
