An optical recording medium for recording a predetermined subtitle code in a predetermined region in which contents are stored, and an apparatus and method to play the optical recording medium which are capable of displaying a subtitle on a screen when the contents are played. The method of playing an optical recording medium includes analyzing a stream that is read from the optical recording medium, and searching whether a predetermined subtitle code is recorded in a reserved region in a predetermined stream, storing the searched predetermined subtitle code and outputting the stored predetermined subtitle code with a command execution key, and signal-processing the predetermined subtitle code that is output with the command execution key, and displaying the signal-processed predetermined subtitle code on a screen of the played optical recording medium.

A method for correctly determining optimum recording power through detecting whether a radio frequency (RF) top channel signal is correct, including determining a certain location for performing optimum power control (OPC) by checking a counter area in a power calibration area (PCA) in an optical recording medium, and recording an eight to fourteen modulation signal (EFM) in a test area in the PCA, performing analog/digital sampling with respect to an RF top channel signal and an RF bottom channel signal which are generated while reading test data repeatedly recorded in the PCA in regular sequence, and checking a noise level of the sampled RF top channel signal, and when the noise level of the RF top channel signal is greater than a preset reference value, determining that an error has occurred in detecting the optimum recording power to therefore abandon a certain area in the PCA wherein the OPC is being performed, and re-performing the OPC in a new area. Accordingly, by detecting whether the top channel signal is correct and re-performing the OPC when the top channel signal has an error, the optimum recording power can be more correctly determined.

A method and apparatus for preventing a malfunction of a disc drive due to an operation error of a correction function for a minimum pit length by selectively performing the correction function based on an operative state of the disc drive. An optical disk drive comprises a drive body, a spindle motor, an optical pickup device, a sled motor, a tray, a loading motor, and a controller. When the loaded optical disk is ejected, the controller controls the sled motor and the loading motor so that the returning of the optical pickup device and the opening of the tray are performed in non-chronological order. Accordingly, the time for the ejection of the optical disk is reduced.
