Disclosed are display devices and methods of fabricating the same. The display device comprises a display panel, an optical layer on the display panel, and a backlight unit that is below the display panel and provides the display panel with light. The optical layer includes a plurality of optical fiber segments, and an air layer between the optical fiber segments. The light generated from the backlight unit is provided to the optical fiber segments through the display panel, and the light is diffused by the optical fiber segments and an air layer dispersed among the optical fiber segments.

A width in a cross section of the wavelength converting member along a direction substantially vertical to the substrate becomes smaller as a distance from the substrate becomes greater.

A display apparatus includes a display panel, a backlight unit, a backlight control circuit, sensors, a read-out circuit and a sensor auxiliary circuit. The display panel includes pixels and displays an image. The backlight unit includes a first light source which emits a first light in a infrared light range. The backlight control circuit controls a brightness of the first light source. The sensors sense an external signal and outputs first sensing signals. The read-out circuit outputs the first sensing signals as second sensing signals. The sensor auxiliary circuit compares a maximum value and a minimum value of the second sensing signals and provides a brightness control signal to the backlight control circuit based on the compared difference to control the brightness of the first light source.

The upper and lower covers accommodate the display panel and the backlight unit. The backlight unit includes light guide plates spaced apart from each other, a light source part, an optical member and an optical diffusion member overlapping a space between the light guide plates. The optical diffusion member includes a diffusing part and a supporting part. A display device includes a display panel and a light emitting device to supply light to the display panel. The light emitting device includes a light emitting element emitting a first light and a fluorescent layer receiving the first light, transmitting a portion of the first light, converting a remaining portion of the first light to a second light having a wavelength range different from the first light, and emitting the second light. The second light emitted by the fluorescent layer has a full width at half maximum equal to or larger than 110 nanometers (nm) and a light emission spectrum having a peak wavelength within a wavelength range of about 530 nm to about 560 nm. A light source apparatus includes light-emitting blocks, a local dimming control part and a light source driving part driving. The light-emitting blocks include a first-color light source which emits first-color light and a second-color light source which emits second-color light. The second-color light source includes a third-color chip and a fourth-color phosphor disposed on the third-color chip, and is disposed as one package to emit the second-color light therefrom. The local dimming control part compensates a driving current of the first-color light source and a driving current of the second-color light source of each of the light-emitting blocks. The light source driving part drives the first-color light source and the second-color light sources based on the driving current of the first-color light source and the a driving current of the second-color light source, respectively, each compensated by the local dimming control part.
