A fishing reel having a frame and an operating mechanism on the frame. The operating mechanism includes a line carrying spool, an element that is rotatable relative to the frame around a first axis to cause line to be directed onto the spool, and a crank handle that is rotatable relative to the frame around a second axis to thereby cause the first element to be rotated around the first axis. The crank handle has a body with a first portion projecting radially in one direction from the second axis, a graspable element on the first body portion, and a counterbalance assembly. The counterbalance assembly includes a second portion of the body which projects radially from the second axis oppositely to the one direction and a first weight element attached to the second portion of the body.

In a drag assembly for a spinning reel, the drag assembly including a line spool and a drag dial rotatably positioned in a distal end portion of the line spool, the line spool having an interior wall and the drag dial having an outer wall, the improvement comprising a sealing element sealing between the interior wall and the outer wall. The improvement preferably also comprises a groove provided in one of the interior wall and the outer wall. Additionally, the sealing element preferably comprises a first portion positioned in the groove.

A rotor assembly for a fishing reel, which rotor assembly includes a rotor having a first rotational axis, a bail assembly that is repositionable relative to the rotor between cast and retrieve positions, and a trigger that is movable relative to the rotor around a second axis between normal and actuated positions. The bail assembly is movable from the retrieve position towards the cast position as an incident of the trigger moving from the normal position to the actuated position. The trigger has a forwardly projecting leg. A gripping portion is applied to the forwardly projecting leg to facilitate engagement of the forwardly projecting leg by a user.

A fishing reel with a frame having a first axis and forward and rear ends spaced axially relative to the first axis and an operating mechanism on the frame. The operating mechanism includes a line carrying spool, a rotor that is rotatable around the first axis relative to the frame, a bail assembly on the frame which is changeable between a cast position and a retrieve position, a rotor operator, and a drive train through which the rotor is rotated around the first axis in response to operation of the rotor operator. The operating mechanism further has a bail actuating system for moving the bail assembly from the retrieve position into the cast position. The bail actuating system includes a bail moving assembly which moves in a fore and aft direction relative to the frame, and a motion changing linkage which produces a force on the bail assembly that urges the bail assembly from the retrieve position towards the cast position as an incident of the bail moving assembly moving from a normal position forwardly relative to the frame into an opening position. The bail moving assembly has a portion that cooperates with the frame to guide the bail moving assembly between the normal and opening positions.

An oscillation assembly for a fishing reel comprising: an elongate member; a transmission body having a side face; and a reciprocating assembly for imparting reciprocating movement to the transmission body. The transmission body includes a groove formed in the side face for receiving the elongate member. The elongate member can be placed in the groove by delivering the elongate member laterally into the side of the fishing reel.

A fishing reel having a frame and an operating mechanism on the frame including a line carrying spool, a first element for directing line onto the line carrying spool, first structure cooperating between the first element and frame for mounting the first element for rotation relative to the frame in a first direction about a first axis as an incident of which line is wrapped around the line carrying spool, and second structure selectively preventing the first element from rotating oppositely to the first direction around the first axis. The second structure includes a clutch assembly having inner and outer rings, third structure cooperating between the first element and one of the inner and outer rings for keying the one of the inner and outer rings to the first element so that the one of the inner and outer rings is fixed against rotation relative to the first element around the first axis, fourth structure cooperating between the inner and outer rings for a) permitting rotation of the other of the inner and outer rings relative to the inner and outer rings in one direction around the first axis and b) preventing rotation of the other of the inner and outer rings relative to the one of the inner and outer rings oppositely to the one direction around the first axis, and fifth structure cooperating between the frame and clutch assembly for selectively c) limiting rotation of the other of the inner and outer rings relative to the frame and d) permitting continuous rotation of the other of the inner and outer rings relative to the frame.
