The present invention provides a liquid crystal display having excellent visibility. A thin film transistor array panel is provided, which includes: gate lines formed on an insulating substrate; data lines insulated from the gate lines and intersecting the gate lines; first pixel electrodes disposed on pixel areas defined by intersections of the gate lines and the data lines; first thin film transistors, each having three terminals connected to one of the gate lines, one of the data lines, and one of the first pixel electrodes; second pixel electrodes disposed on the pixel areas and capacitively coupled to the first pixel electrodes; and second thin film transistors, each having three terminals connected to a previous gate line, a storage electrode line or one of the data lines, and one of the second pixel electrodes.

Liquid crystal display and panel therefor

A liquid crystal display includes first and second gate lines arranged in parallel to each other and sequentially transmitting a gate voltage, a data line crossing the first and second gate lines and transmitting a data voltage, a pixel electrode constituted by first and second sub-pixel electrodes and electrically disconnected from each other, a first switching element connected to the first gate line, the data line, and the first sub-pixel electrode, a second switching element connected to the first gate line, the data line, and the second sub-pixel electrode, a third switching element connected to the first sub-pixel electrode across a charge-sharing capacitor, and a fourth switching element connected to the second gate line and the second sub-pixel electrode and connected to the first sub-pixel electrode across the charge-sharing capacitor.

Liquid crystal display

A pixel electrode and a direction control electrode capacitively coupled to the pixel electrode are provided in a pixel. A pixel thin film transistor is connected to a gate line, a data line, and the pixel electrode. A direction control electrode thin film transistor is connected to a previous gate line, a previous data lines or a next data line, and the direction control electrode. The gate lines are supplied with scanning signals, and each scanning signal includes first and second pulses in a frame. The first pulse of a scanning signal is synchronized with the second pulse of a previous scanning signal.

In a display apparatus having a plurality of pixel parts, each pixel part receives a data signal in response to a present gate signal and charges first and second pixel voltages having the same voltage level. A plurality of voltage controllers includes a level-down part to lower a voltage level of the second pixel voltage using a previous pixel voltage charged in a previous frame in response to a next gate signal and a level-up part to receive the lowered second pixel voltage in response to the next gate signal to boost up a voltage level of the first pixel voltage.

A gray scale voltage generator and a method of generating a gray scale voltage in a transmissive and reflective type liquid crystal display device are disclosed. A transmissive mode gray scale data are transformed into real reflective mode gray scale data. An integer part is extracted from the real reflective mode gray scale data as a first reflective mode gray scale data. The first reflective mode gray scale data and temporary reflective mode gray scale data are mixed in a predetermined ratio by N-frame period. The temporary reflective mode gray scale data has a sum of one and the first reflective mode gray scale data. Pseudo gray scale data are inserted into the second reflective mode gray scale data. Therefore, superior display quality is provided in both transmissive and reflective mode.

Thin film transistor panel for multi-domain liquid crystal display

A liquid crystal display including an upper panel having an upper alignment layer, a lower panel having a lower alignment layer, and a liquid crystal layer including liquid crystal molecules interposed between the upper panel and the lower panel. Each of the liquid crystal molecules has different refractive indexes and different permittivities with respect to each axis direction. The upper alignment layer and the lower alignment layer are vertical alignment layers and have a rubbing direction, respectively. Before the application of an electric field, a first axis of each liquid crystal molecule is aligned in a vertical direction by the vertical alignment layer, and a second axis of each liquid crystal molecule is aligned in a direction parallel to the rubbing direction, and, after the application of the electric field, one having the largest permittivity of the axis directions of the liquid crystal molecule is aligned in parallel to the applied electric field.
