Disclosed is a Fringe Field Switching (FFS) mode Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) including lower substrate, an upper substrate and a liquid crystal layer interposed between the substrates. Each pixel region is defined by gate lines and data lines formed to cross each other on the lower substrate. Switching devices are disposed at intersections of the gate lines and the data lines. The FFS mode LCD includes a transparent pixel electrode, and a transparent common electrode disposed apart from the transparent pixel electrode by an insulating layer interposed therebetween to adjust a transmittance by applying an electric field to the liquid crystal layer. A metal line of a specific thickness is formed to be electrically connected with the transparent common electrode on or under the transparent common electrode of a non-opening region in which the gate lines and the data lines are formed.

Fringe field switching mode liquid crystal display device

Provided is a Fringe Field Switching (FFS) mode Liquid Crystal Display (LCD). In the FFS mode LCD, a lower substrate, an upper substrate and a liquid crystal layer interposed between the substrates are included, each pixel region is defined by gate lines and data lines formed to cross each other on the lower substrate, and switching devices are disposed at intersections of the gate lines and the data lines. The FFS mode LCD includes a transparent pixel electrode, and a transparent common electrode disposed apart from the transparent pixel electrode by an insulating layer interposed between the transparent pixel electrode and the transparent common electrode, in the pixel region to adjust transmittance by applying an electric field to the liquid crystal layer, the transparent common electrode has a plurality of bars having a predetermined width in a direction substantially parallel to the data lines, the transparent common electrode has a first bar formed to cover the data lines and a second bar formed adjacent to the first bar in a central area of the pixel region, a distance between the first bar and the second bar is larger than a distance between bars formed in the pixel region, and one end of the transparent pixel electrode is disposed between the first bar and the adjacent secondbar.

A fringe field switching mode LCD includes a lower substrate having a gate bus line and a data bus line arranged to cross each other and form unit pixels and a counter electrode and a pixel electrode positioned within each unit pixel region with a gate insulator interposed between them and an upper substrate provided with a color filter corresponding to each pixel region and bonded to the lower substrate with a liquid crystal layer interposed between them. The pixel electrode includes first pixel electrodes positioned on the gate insulator while being spaced from each other and second pixel electrodes positioned between the respective first pixel electrodes with a predetermined angle relative to them.

Disclosed is a fringe field switching mode transflective liquid crystal display capable of displaying high quality images. The transflective liquid crystal display includes a lower substrate having a counter electrode and a pixel electrode, an upper substrate aligned in opposition to the lower substrate by interposing a liquid crystal layer therebetween, an upper polarizing plate, a lower polarizing plate, a reflective plate provided at an inner portion of the lower substrate, a lower &#x3bb;/2 plate, and an upper &#x3bb;/2 plate. An inclination angle, a slit width and a slit interval of the pixel electrode of the reflective area are different from those of the pixel electrode of the transmissive area. The liquid crystal layer presents a phase delay of about 0 to &#x3bb;/4 in the reflective area and presents a phase delay of about 0 to &#x3bb;/2 in the transmissive area.

The present invention provides a liquid crystal display having improved screen quality by preventing abnormal light leakage due to ions in a pixel. The present invention comprises: an array substrate whereon a plurality of gate lines and data lines are arranged to be perpendicular to each other, a TFT is formed at the intersection of the lines and a pixel electrode is formed in a pixel region defined by the lines; a color filter substrate combined with the array substrate, whereon a color filter is formed corresponding to the pixel region, a block matrix is formed corresponding to the interface of pixels and a counter electrode is formed on the whole surface including the color filter and the black matrix; and a liquid crystal layer comprising a plurality of liquid crystal molecules interposed between the array substrate and the color filter substrate, wherein the pixel electrode has a rectangular shape and a plurality of acute angle Tips are formed on the edges thereof.

Liquid crystal display having fast response time and preventing color shift is disclosed. The liquid crystal display comprises: a lower substrate having a plurality of gate bus lines disposed parallel to each other, a plurality of data bus lines disposed perpendicular to the gate bus lines and defining matrix type sub pixels together with the gate bus lines, a thin film transistor provided adjacent to an intersection of the gate bus line and the data bus line, and a pixel electrode connected to the thin film transistor and disposed within the sub pixel; an upper substrate opposed to the lower substrate with a selected distance and having a counter electrode, the counter electrode formed at a portion corresponding to the sub pixel and forming an electric field together with the pixel electrode; a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between and having a plurality of liquid crystal molecules; a first homeotropic alignment layer and a second homeotropic alignment layer formed at inner face of the lower substrate and at inner face of the upper substrate respectively; and a first polarizing plate and a second polarizing plate attached at outer face of the lower substrate and at outer face of the upper substrate respectively, wherein the electric field formed between the counter electrode and the pixel electrode is formed as an oblique line with respect to the lower substrate surface, and is formed as a diagonal line having a symmetry with respect to the data bus line and the gate bus line.

A reflective type fringe field switching mode liquid crystal display device having improved contrast is provided. The device has a lower and an upper substrates arranged with a distance and having a unit pixel defined therein. Between the substrates, a liquid crystal layer having a plurality of liquid crystal molecules are interposed. A counter electrode is formed on an inner surface of the lower substrate in the unit pixel. A pixel electrode is formed above the counter electrode. The pixel electrode and the counter electrode generate a fringe field for driving the liquid crystal molecules in the unit pixel. A horizontal alignment layer having a rubbing axis is interposed between the lower substrate and the liquid crystal layer, and a vertical alignment layer is interposed between the upper substrate and the liquid crystal layer. In addition, a polarizer is disposed on an outer surface of the upper substrate and having a polarizing axis.

Liquid crystal display device of reflective type fringe field switching mode

Disclosed is a fringe field switching liquid crystal display (FFS-LCD) and a method for manufacturing the same. The FFS-LCD comprises: a lower substrate; a plurality of gate bus lines extending along a selected direction on the lower substrate; a plurality of data bus lines disposed on the lower substrate in a manner such that they are crossed with the plurality of gate bus lines, for defining a unit pixel; a gate insulating film for insulating the gate bus lines and the data bus lines from each other; a thin film transistor located at a place where the gate bus lines and the data bus lines are crossed with each other; a pixel electrode formed on the gate insulating film, brought into contact with the thin film transistor and disposed in a space of the unit pixel; a counter electrode overlapped on the pixel electrode, the counter electrode cooperating with the pixel electrode for forming a fringe field which actuates all liquid crystal molecules existing on the pixel electrode and the counter electrode; and a passivation layer intervened between the pixel electrode and the counter electrode, wherein the pixel electrode and the counter electrode are made from a transparent conductive material and the plurality of gate bus lines are made as a metal film including aluminum.

Fringe field switching liquid crystal display and method for manufacturing the same

Disclosed is a liquid crystal displace capable of improving picture quality and having enhanced aperture ratio and transmittance. The liquid crystal display comprises: upper and lower substrates opposed and spaced apart, wherein homogeneous alignment layers are formed at inner surfaces of both substrates; a liquid crystal layer including a plurality of liquid crystal molecules and interposed between the upper and lower substrates; a gate bus line and a data bus line formed between the lower substrate and the homogeneous alignment layer in a matrix configuration thereby defining unit pixel regions; transparent counter and pixel electrodes for driving the liquid crystal molecules formed at a unit pixel region in the lower substrate; and a thin film transistor disposed at an intersection of the gate bus line and the data bus line, and switching the pixel electrode, wherein, when a voltage is applied to the pixel electrode, there are formed electric fields respectively parallel to the gate bus line and the data bus line simultaneously and the liquid crystal molecules on and between the counter and pixel electrodes are all driven by the electric fields.
