A belt transmission apparatus capable of changing a tension of a belt by the action of belt tension adjusterfrom a first optimal value of higher tension suitable for the starting of engineto a second optimal value of lower tension suitable for driving an accessory after enginehas been started. The belt transmission apparatus includes a rotating electric machine pulleyof a rotating electric machine for transmitting starting power to engine; engine pulleyfor transmitting starting power to engineand rotation power of engineto accessories; auxiliary pulleysrotated by the power from engine pulleyto drive the accessories beltwrapped around rotating electric machine pulley, engine pulleyand auxiliary pulleys: and belt tension adjusterfor urging beltto set tension in a plurality of stages.

Belt transmission apparatus

An engine starter protecting device which prevents engagement of the starter's pinion with the ring gear of the engine, even when the engine is rotating. Sensors detect when the gear shift lever is in the neutral position, when the frequency of the ignition pulses for the engine is above a predetermined value, when the vacuum pressure of the intake air to the engine is at or below a predetermined value, when the vacuum pressure of the intake air to the engine is at or below a predetermined value, and when the output voltage from the altenator of the invention exceeds a predetermined voltage. The electromagnetic switch which controls the starter motor is prevented from operating unless the outputs from the detectors are in predetermined states.

Engine starter protecting device

An engine starter protecting device which prevents engagement of the starter's pinion with the ring gear of the engine, even when the engine is rotating. An air pump device comprises an electric motor, a low and a high pressure type pump disposed at both ends of a rotary shaft extending from the motor to be connected in series to each other through a discharge tube from the low pressure type pump extending to a suction port of the high pressure type pump, and an air suction tube connected via a valve to the discharge tube downstream of a change-over switch disposed in the discharge tube.
