A water-based ballpoint pen including a specific aqueous ink, a ball, a ballpoint pen tip that holds the ball at a front end of the ballpoint pen tip, an ink follower following the ink with consumption of the ink, and an ink container directly containing the ink and the ink follower. The ink container communicates with a rear portion of the tip. The ink follower includes at least a base oil and a thickener. The ball point pen tip discharges the ink from the top end portion. The ink container supplies the ink to the tip.

Water-based ballpoint pen

An ink follower composition to be provided at the rear end of an ink held directly in an ink container of a writing instrument and capable of going forward with consumption of the ink. The composition comprises at least one selected from an ethylene-&#x3b1;-olefin co-oligomer, an &#x3b1;-olefin oil, a purified mineral oil and a polybutene, and added thereto a specific fatty acid amide. This composition can simultaneously satisfy the two important performances conflicting with each other, the ink flow-back preventive performance and the ink follow-up performance.
