Disclosed are medical devices having lubricious coatings which are capable of producing magnetic resonance image in the presence of a suitable magnetic field. The medical devices are easy to manipulate in body channels because of reduced friction with tissue surfaces and can be readily visualized in real time, which greatly facilitates the tracking of the medical devices while present within the bodies of humans or animals. The level of magnetic susceptible agent in the coatings of medical devices can be easily controlled by the present invention to give the desired performance. Coating processes to produce these medical devices are also disclosed.

Hydrophilic, lubricious medical devices having contrast for magnetic resonance imaging

Articles having lubricious polymeric coatings are disclosed. The coatings are comprised of a substantially homogeneous composite of poly(ethylene oxide) and polyisocyanate applied in a single step operation as a mixture in an inert solvent. The coating is believed to form a polymeric complex through an in-situ hydrolysis of the polyisocyanate in the system without substantial crosslinking to form polyurethanes. The polymeric complexes have particular utility in providing medical devices such as catheters with a high degree of abrasion resistance and lubricity when in contact with bodily fluids.

One step thromboresistant lubricious coating

A method of making articles having lubricious polymeric coatings are disclosed. The coatings are comprised of a substantially homogeneous composite of poly(ethylene oxide) and polyisocyanate applied in a single step operation as a mixture in an inert solvent. The coating is believed to form a polymeric complex through an in-situ hydrolysis of the polyisocyanate in the system without substantial crosslinking to form polyurethanes. The polymeric complexes have particular utility in providing medical devices such as catheters with a high degree of abrasion resistance and lubricity when in contact with bodily fluids.

One-step thromboresistant, lubricious coating

Dermal patches containing a flexible, crosslinked, polymeric gel comprising polyvinyl alcohol and a crosslinking agent comprising a multivalent element, e.g., titanium complexed with hydroxyalkyl amines, are disclosed. The dermal patches can be used to deliver pharmaceutically active agents to the dermal surface of a mammal, or alternatively can be used without the pharmaceutically active agents. The dermal patches have properties, such as, for example, a high degree of water absorbency, oxygen permeability and physiological compatibility which render them suitable for treatment of open skin, e.g., lacerations, burns or blisters, as well as unbroken, intact skin.

Dermal patch

A medical balloon and catheter in which the balloon (14) is wrapped and folded upon itself tortuously and tightly so outer surfaces (12) contact each other for insertion into the body and in which the balloon is free of bridging and adhesion between abutting surfaces. The balloon has a base of a continuous polymeric surface (10) expandable from a folded, wrapped configuration with surfaces touching each other into a balloon when inflated. A lubricious, biocompatible, hydrogel coating (11) is disposed on the polymeric surface and a thin, lubricious, blood-compatible coating (12) is disposed upon the hydrogel coating and adheres to it to prevent abutting surfaces of the folded polymeric surfaces from adhering to each other during inflation and to prevent delamination of the hydrogel coating and/or rupture of the balloon. Preferably the blood-compatible coating (12) is polyethylene glycol, methoxy polyethylene glycol or mixtures thereof having a molecular weight between about 100 and 20,000 grams per gram mole.

Medical device with lubricious coating

Biocompatible polymeric complexes having utility in many fields including medical applications, as well as personal and health care, are provided and can be affixed to a variety of substrate materials which themselves may or may not also be biocompatible. The complexes of this invention are comprised of a carboxylic acid polymer with either a poly(lower-alkylene oxide) or a poly(N-vinyl lactam). Moreover, a complex of an antimicrobial agent such as iodine can be formed with the complex to provide antimicrobial activity. The complexes are also useful for forming biocompatible coatings on medical devices, some of which can render the surface lubricious when exposed to aqueous or body fluids.

Biocompatible hydrophilic complexes and process for preparation and use

A new method is provided to impart a hydrophilic lubriciious coating onto articles such as medical devices. A device, for example a catheter, is first contacted with a polyisocyanate solution, to provide coupling, then contacted with a poly(carboxylic acid) solution to give a coating, and is then finally oven dried. These coatings have lubricity that only becomes manifest upon exposure to water ro body fluids, and moreover, are also long lasting and have good abrasion resistance. This combination of properties is not available from other currently used or proposed coatings.

Hydrophilic lubricious coatings

Cationic, anionic and amphoteric polymers suitable for the preparation of acid viscosifier compositions and the acid viscosified compositions are provided. The polymers are water soluble or water dispersible and are based on acrylyl monomers having the stated ionic charge. They are capable of viscosifying acid solutions that have important use in recovery of gas and oil from subterranean formations.

Acid viscosifier compositions

Gelable acid compositions containing novel crosslinkable copolymers and the novel copolymers. The copolymers contain an N-(alkoxymethylene)acrylyl moiety. In addition there are provided gelable acid compositions containing a group of polyfunctional reactants that contain a plurality of --CH.sub.2 OH and/or --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH groups in the molecule.

A process for the water-in-oil emulsion polymerization of at least one ethylenically-unsaturated water-soluble monomer is disclosed which comprises forming a water-in-oil emulsion of said monomer, forming a small amount of polymer of said monomer in said emulsion to obtain a shear stable emulsion and then completing the polymerization of the monomer.

Process for the polymerization of shear-stable water-in-oil emulsions

A process for the water-in-oil emulsion polymerization of at least one ethylenically-unsaturated monomer is disclosed wherein a water-in-oil emulsion of said monomer is polymerized in the presence of a first, highly reactive polymerization initiator until a small amount of polymer is present sufficient to provide a shear-stable emulsion, followed by completing the polymerization in the presence of a second, less reactive polymerization initiator.

Process for producing a polymer water-in-oil emulsion

A high molecular weight, water-soluble polymer, water-in-oil emulsions thereof and a flocculating process using same are disclosed. The polymer may be represented by the formula: ##STR1## wherein A represents a repeating unit derived from a hydrophobic vinyl monomer having a water-solubility of less than about 5 weight %; R.sub.1 and R.sub.3 are each hydrogen atom or a methyl group; R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are each a hydrogen atom, a methyl group or an ethyl group; R.sub.2 represents a divalent hydrocarbon group having from 2 to 13 carbon atoms; X represents a monovalent cation; B represents a repeating unit derived from an ethylenically-unsaturated carboxylic acid or a salt thereof; m is about 0.1-10 mole %, n is about 1-40 mole %, p is about 20-98.9 mole %, and q is about 0-40 mole % with the proviso that m+n+p+q=100 mole % and r is a large positive integer.

High molecular weight water-soluble polymers and flocculation method

Described herein is a process for flocculating phosphatic slimes which comprises (a) forming a concentrated aqueous solution from a water-soluble ter-or higher polymer water-in oil emulsion, (b) diluting said concentrated aqueous solution of ter-or higher polymer formed in step (a) with additional water, (c) mixing the diluted solution of (b) with phosphatic slimes under appropriate floc forming conditions and (d) allowing the suspended solids to settle from said slime to form an essentially clear aqueous supernatant.

Process for flocculating phophatic slimes

Described herein are water soluble acrylamide containing polymers having an intrinsic viscosity of at least about 15 dl/g. These polymers are suitable for use in water purification.
