A disk cartridge device includes first and second disk cartridges of different sizes for housing therein disks of different disk diameters and a cassette compartment onto which the first and second disk cartridges are selectively loaded, the cassette compartment including a pair of positioning pins having height-deciding bases for properly placing the first disk cartridge and a pair of positioning pins having height-deciding bases for properly placing the second disk cartridge, wherein the first disk cartridge has stepped escape holes formed on its lower surface to enable itself to escape from the positioning pins by which the second disk cartridge is properly positioned in the loading state when positioning holes of the first disk cartridge are properly fitted into positioning pins and the height is properly decided.

A disk drive preventing entry of air containing dust into a cartridge when a rotation table enters from an opening formed in a bottom surface of the cartridge and makes a disk-shaped recording medium rotate includes a carrier in which a cartridge accommodating a hard disk is loaded, a rotation table which enters from a disk drive opening in the bottom surface of the cartridge, clamps and makes the disk rotate when the cartridge is loaded in the carrier, and a sealing member which is attached to the carrier and which is formed with a lip in press-contact with the bottom surface of the cartridge so as to surround the disk drive opening when the cartridge is loaded in the carrier. A magnetic disk assembly having a stack of magnetic disks supported by a clamp ring is disclosed. A cap is fastened to the top of a spindle hub by screws beforehand. Subsequently, a clamp ring is affixed to the cap by shrinkage fit. Even when some defects are found on a stack of disks, the defective disks can be readily removed from the spindle hub and replaced.

A magnetic head positioner for a magnetic disk apparatus has an arm holder rotatably supported on a shaft by a plurality of bearings. The arm holder provides a plurality of arms carrying magnetic heads for writing and reading data at tip ends thereof. A first cylindrical sleeve is interposed between the bearings and the arm holder and fixed to the outer peripheral surface of the bearings. The first cylindrical sleeve is also made of a material having a linear expansion coefficient substantially the same as that of the shaft. A pair of second cylindrical sleeves are interposed between the bearings and the arm holder and fixed to the first cylindrical sleeve at one end portion thereof and to the inner peripheral surface of the arm holder at the other end portion thereof. The pair of second cylindrical sleeves are also made of a material having substantially the same linear expansion coefficient substantially as that of the arm holder. Thermal offtracking of the magnetic heads with respect to the disk is thus minimized.

A magnetic head positioner for a magnetic disk apparatus has a holder arm for swinging a plurality of magnetic heads mounted on one end thereof for reading and writing data, the holder arm having a center portion thereof provided with a cylindrical boss portion, a fixed shaft provided on a center axis of the cylindrical boss portion of the holder arm and acting as a center axis of the swing motion of the holder arm, a cylindrical sleeve interposed between the holder arm and the fixed shaft and rotatably supported on the fixed shaft with a predetermined gap with respect to an inner side surface of the cylindrical boss portion of the holder arm, the cylindrical sleeve having flange members at opposite end portions thereof covering the cylindrical boss portion with a predetermined gap with respect thereto and a motor mounted in between the fixed shaft and the cylindrical sleeve for generating force for rotating the cylindrical sleeve about the shaft. On either of the holder arm or the cylindrical sleeve, grooves for generating dynamic hydraulic pressure are formed and configuration of the grooves is an outward type, an inward type or a herringbone type configuration.

When an armature oscillates due to a great current fed thereto, O-rings intervening between the armature and a shaft damp the oscillation before it is transmitted to a housing and a cover via the shaft. The O-rings, therefore, allow the motor to rotate at high speed while producing a minimum of noise.

A magnetic head holder is arranged on the outer peripheral surface of the cylindrical sleeve and provided with arms having magnetic heads. The arms, which are provided with the magnetic heads, protrude from an outer peripheral part of the magnetic head holder in a horizontal direction. A cylindrical correcting plate, which includes a material having a different coefficient of linear expansion from that of the shaft, is interposed in a prescribed part of the cylindrical sleeve and may be made of AlTiC or Al.sub.2 O.sub.3. An area of the outer peripheral surface of the cylindrical sleeve excluding the upper and lower parts thereof is slightly reduced in diameter to form a gap at a prescribed area. The gap is formed to reduce contact areas between the cylindrical sleeve and the magnetic head holder.

A magnetic head for use in a magnetic disk drive. An arm included in the head is partly constituted by a member which is different in the coefficient of thermal expansion from the other portion of the arm. A magnetic disk drive spindle motor includes a cylindrical spindle hub, a pair of cylindrical bearings, cylindrical bearing holders, a shaft, a housing, and dynamic pressure generating plates. The spindle hub stacks and supports an information storage medium in an axial direction and incorporates a first member constituting a rotary drive system. The bearings rotatably hold two ends of the spindle hub by outer rings. The bearing holders hold the outer rings of the bearings and rotate together with the spindle hub. The shaft holds inner rings of the bearings and fixes a second member constituting a rotary drive system so as to oppose the first member. The housing fixes and supports one end of the shaft. The dynamic pressure generating plates are formed in a disk-like form having a predetermined thickness and fixed on the shaft outside the bearings to oppose inner side surfaces of the bearings with small gaps, and generate dynamic pressures in the gaps between the dynamic pressure generating plates and the inner side surfaces of the bearings, thereby shielding the internal space of the motor from the outside.
