A polymer film substrate is irradiated with ions to make a large number of nano-sized through-holes and the substrate may be further irradiated with ionizing radiation so that a functional monomer may be grafted or co-grafted onto a surface of the film and within the holes; in addition, sulfonic acid group(s) may be introduced into the graft chains to produce a polymer ion-exchange membrane that may have high oxidation resistance, dimensional stability, electrical conductivity and/or methanol resistance, as well as may have an ion-exchange capacity controlled over a wide range.

Processes for producing nano-space controlled polymer ion-exchange membranes

Polycarbosilane is mixed with 5-35 wt % of polyvinylsilane to prepare a silicon-base polymer blend which is impregnated in silicon carbide fibers or fabrics to form a preceramic molding body which is exposed to an ionizing radiation to be rendered curing and then fired in an inert gas to produce a composite in which the silicon carbide matrix is reinforced with the silicon carbide fibers.

Process for producing silicon carbide composites from silicon-based polymers by radiation application

Fibers as a reinforcing substrate are impregnated with the particles of polytetrafluoroethylene and pressed into a shape at the melting point of polytetrafluoroethylene. Alternatively, the reinforcing substrate sandwiched between polytetrafluoroethylene sheets is pressed into a shape at the melting point of polytetrafluoroethylene. In either case, the shaped article is then exposed to an ionizing radiation in an oxygen-free atmosphere at the melting point of polytetrafluoroethylene. The inherent characteristics of the polytetrafluoroethylene, i.e., heat resistance, chemical resistance, abrasion resistance and lubricity, are retained and yet radiation resistance and resin transparency are imparted.

Fluoroplastic composites and a process for producing the same

A fire-retardant and radiation resistant molded resin product is prepared by blending a resin with a halogenated acenaphthylene compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein X is chlorine or bromine and R is alkyl, alkoxy or alkylester of 1 to 4 carbon atoms such that when m is 0, n is an integer of 2 to 8; when m is an integer of 1 to 4, n is an integer of 2 to 7 and n+m is .ltoreq.8 and when m is more than 2, R may be the same or different; and, after molding said blend, generating free radicals within said blend.
