Methods, systems, and devices are described for service discovery and connection establishment of a point-to-point (e.g., device-to-device) wireless communication. Wireless devices may initiate point-to-point communication utilizing ultrasonic signals. A user may initiate a scan for one device to detect, select, and establish a connection with another device, where the scan utilizes an ultrasonic signal. Once connected, the device may create a profile with one anther and/or wirelessly communicate with one another to, for example, exchange data.

Fast service discovery and pairing using ultrasonic communication

A wireless transceiver is provided for transmitting and receiving audio data, comprising: a microphone configured to generate a digital audio signal that includes the audio data, based on a received sound sampled into digital format; a voice detection circuit configured to detect the presence of voice activity in the audio data, and to generate a voice detection signal indicating whether the voice activity is present in the audio data; a transceiver circuit configured to transmit the audio data over a wireless medium; and a control circuit configured to control transmission of the audio data over the wireless medium by the transceiver circuit, based on the voice detection signal. This allows saving of transmission power since no transmission is done during the silence periods. The digital audio signal is at least one of a pulse code modulated signal without compression, and a Bluetooth signal.

System and method for reducing power consumption in a wireless device

A novel and useful mechanism for reducing the required backoff and the peak to average power ratio (PAPR) needed for an OFDM transmitter whiles still meeting spectral mask and EVM specifications. The mechanism searches, for each packet to be transmitted, for several possible scrambler and encryption sequences that would yield the best spectral mask and EVM with lowest PAPR. The search can be performed using the existing transmitter and receiver PHY circuit chain to modulate and demodulate the candidate hypotheses. Once the scrambler sequence and/or encryption sequence is selected, the packet is transmitted using the selected scrambler and encryption sequences. In addition, the invention exploits the fact that even for very low backoff margins, a reduced number of candidate hypotheses may be tested while still yielding a high probability of meet the spectral mask and EVM specifications.

Apparatus for and method of minimizing backoff for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing transmission

A novel and useful apparatus for and method of local oscillator (LO) generation with non-integer multiplication ratio between the local oscillator and RF frequencies. The LO generation schemes presented are operative to generate I and Q square waves at a designated frequency while avoiding the well known issue of harmonic pulling. A synthesizer provides 4/3 the desired frequency f. This frequency is divided by two to obtain in-phase and quadrature square waves at &#x2154; f. The in-phase signal is divided by two again to obtain in-phase and quadrature square waves at &#x2153; f. The signals are then logically combined using XOR operations to obtain I and Q branch signals containing spectral spurs. Since the spurs are located in non-disturbing bands, they can be filtered out resulting in the desired output signal.

Methods and apparatus to manage power consumption in wireless devices are disclosed. A disclosed example apparatus comprises performing a first received signal strength indicator (RSSI) scan to determine a beacon interval and a first beacon time for a wireless channel, calculating a second beacon time for the wireless channel based on the beacon interval and the first beacon time, and performing a second RSSI scan for the wireless channel during a time interval that includes the calculated second beacon time. In some examples, the wireless channel is a wireless channel that was previously identified as active, is a wireless channel that previously had the highest received power level, and/or is selected from a list of popular or frequently used channels. Additionally or alternatively, when a wireless channel with sufficient signal level is identified, scanning for additional channels is not performed.

Methods and apparatus to manage power consumption in wireless local area network devices

A dual-signal wireless transceiver is provided, comprising: a first wireless transceiver circuit configured to transmit and receive first signals using a first protocol; a second wireless transceiver circuit configured to transmit and receive second signals using a second protocol; and a control circuit configured to generate control signals to control operation of the first and second wireless transceiver circuits, wherein the first wireless transceiver circuit is configured to disable second transmission operations by the second wireless transceiver during first transmission operations by the first wireless transceiver circuit through the use of a shutdown signal. In this method, the second protocol allows the second wireless transceiver to retransmit first signals whose transmission was disabled by the shutdown signal. Furthermore, the second protocol is a Bluetooth protocol, and the first protocol is a wireless protocol other than the Bluetooth protocol.

System and method for avoiding interference in a dual-signal device

A novel and useful mechanism for automatically establishing a radio link between a communications device and a commercially available FM radio receiver, thereby eliminating the need to manually configure both the target FM radio receiver and the FM transmitter to a suitable FM station. The mechanism scans the RF spectrum periodically for candidate frequencies over which to transmit the desired audio signal to the target radio. Once a suitable frequency is detected, the mechanism waits for an incoming call in the case of a cellular phone or immediately establishes a link such as in the case of a multimedia player. When a connection is to be established, a Radio Data System compatible bitstream is transmitted to configure the target radio to jump to an 'alternate frequency' when reception conditions are poor enough. To ensure that the target radio receiver jumps to the desired station, the FM transmitter sends a CW signal to jam or block the station the target radio is currently tuned to. This causes the target radio to jump to the alternate frequency.
