A device and method for receiving and processing single carrier and multiple carrier signals through substantially common elements within a receiver that uses a radix 2 FFT on the signal, equalizes both types of signals in the frequency domain and then, for the multiple carrier signal performs a polynomial interpolation to bring the signal to symbol rate and for the single carrier signal performs an IFFT and samples the output to produce a signal at symbol rate.

Unified single and multiple carrier receiver architecture

A television receiver includes a tuner, a bandpass filter, an intermediate frequency amplifier and a demodulator. The tuner has an input to receive radio frequency signals and an output to provide modulated analog and digital television signals at an intermediate frequency. The bandpass filter and the intermediate frequency amplifier provide a singular signal path to filter and amplify both the modulated analog and digital television signals at the intermediate frequency. The demodulator has a singular input coupled to the output of the intermediate frequency amplifier and a plurality of outputs. The plurality of outputs includes a first output to provide demodulated analog television signals in response to the output of the tuner providing modulated analog television signals at the intermediate frequency and a second output to provide demodulated digital television signals in response to the output of the tuner providing modulated digital television signals at the intermediate frequency.

Apparatus for receiving both analog and digital TV signals

An apparatus for improved reception of a signal is described. The apparatus includes an equalizer that has at least two cascaded maximum-likelihood detectors and an adjustable delay unit. The equalizer and the adjustable delay unit are configured for adaptation in accordance with one or more multi-path signals in a communication channel that conveys the signal.

Double equalizer for multi-path rejection

A signal receiver inputs a signal, computes a set of equalizer tap values during a signal acquisition phase by applying an algorithm iteratively to a given set of training data contained within the signal, and uses the set of equalizer tap values to perform signal equalization during the signal acquisition phase. The algorithm includes computing and applying phase correction to the pre-equalized signal at each adaptation step to correct for phase error related to the main path only, of the input signal.

Fast training equalization of a signal by using adaptive-iterative algorithm with main path phase correction

A system for identifying transmission parameters of an OFDM signal transmitted according to a transmitter clock includes a first correlator to receive and correlate samples of the signal sampled according to a receiver clock and provide a first metric indicative of whether the signal has a first transmission mode, a plurality of additional correlators, operable in parallel with the first correlator, to receive and correlate the samples of the signal sampled according to the receiver clock and provide a plurality of additional metrics indicative of whether the signal has a second transmission mode and whether the receiver clock is aligned with or displaced by at least one sample over one OFDM symbol relative to the transmitter clock, and a processor. The processor receives the metrics, and determines whether the signal has the first or second transmission mode and whether the receiver clock is aligned or displaced by the at least one sample relative to the transmitter clock.

System and method for determining transmission parameters in an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexed data stream

A method of operating an equalizer includes combining a Least Mean Squares (LMS) algorithm and a Least Squares (LS) algorithm to determine a set of equalizer tap values to be used in processing a signal. A channel impulse response (CIR) is computed, and an equalizer taps interval is then determined based on the CIR. The LS algorithm is used to determine a set of equalizer major taps based on the interval, and the LMS algorithm is used to determine a set of equalizer minor taps based on the interval.

Combining least squares and least mean squares algorithms to determine equalizer tap values

A circuit is configured to receive and process a signal that includes in-phase and out-of-phase components that correspond to in-phase and out-of-phase components of a time sequence of symbols. A phase sensor in the circuit is configured to determine a phase value in accordance with an equalized version of the in-phase component of the signal and the in-phase component of the time sequence of symbols. The phase sensor is further configured to generate an approximation to the out-of-phase component of the signal in accordance with a Hilbert function of order k greater than 1. Terms in the approximation that correspond to future samples of the in-phase component of the signal are replaced with terms that correspond to past samples of an error that corresponds to a difference between samples of the in-phase component of the signal and an output from a detector.

Receiver with decision-directed equalizer

Apparatus is described for digitally encoding an input audio signal for storage or transmission. A distinguishing parameter is measure from the input signal. It is determined from the measured distinguishing parameter whether the input signal contains an audio signal of a first type or a second type. First and second coders are provided for digitally encoding the input signal using first and second coding methods respectively and a switching arrangement directs, at any particular time, the generation of an output signal by encoding the input signal using either the first or second coders according to whether the input signal contains an audio signal of the first type or the second type at that time. A method for adaptively switching between transform audio coder and CELP coder, is presented. In a preferred embodiment, the method makes use of the superior performance of CELP coders for speech signal coding, while enjoying the benefits of transform coder for other audio signals. The combined coder is designed to handle both speech and music and achieve an improved quality.

Apparatus is disclosed for digitally encoding an input audio signal, for storage or transmission, comprising: a pitch detector for determining at least a dominant time-domain periodicity in the input signal; a generator for generating a prediction signal based on the dominant time domain periodicity of the input signal; a first discrete frequency domain transform generator for generating a frequency domain representation of the input signal; a second discrete frequency domain transform generator for generating a frequency domain representation of the prediction signal; a subtractor to subtract at least a portion of the frequency domain representation of the prediction signal from the frequency domain representation of the input signal to generate an error signal; and a generator to generate an output signal from the error signal and parameters defining the prediction signal. A corresponding decoder is also described.
