A wiper unit comprises a wiper motor provided with a motor yoke and a gear case screwed to the motor yoke, a motor arm, a wiper frame, a pivot shaft, a pivot arm and a link connecting rod. The gear case of the wiper motor is formed with a frame-holder portion having a semi-circular cross section to be fitted with the wiper frame for supporting the wiper frame, and the wiper frame is secured to the frame-holder portion of the gear case by, for example, tightening a screw.

A wiper device is provided with a wiper arm including an arm head, a retainer and a coil spring, and with a lock-back detecting device which detects whether or not the wiper arm is in a 'lock-back' state and shuts off a power supply to the motor in case of detecting the wiper arm to be in the 'lock-back' state. This device makes it possible to prevent a vehicle hood from being hit by the wiper arm or the wiper blade.

A windshield wiper motor having a motor casing and a reduction gear casing is provided with a crooked air passage between the casings which is provided with a breather hole at a position that neither coincides nor overlaps with a projection of the respective openings of the passage into the gear casing and motor casing, so that it is possible to perform a breathing action even if lubricating oil penetrates into the air passage through the opening since the oil will be prevented from entering and clogging the breather hole.
