An image reading device that detects the edge of the image to be read and masks the areas outside the edge during the read. The image reading device includes a light transmittance modification device in the optical path between the image illumination source and the photoelectric conversion device. During a pre-scan of the image, the position of the edge of the image is stored in a memory unit. During the actual scan of the image to be read, the edge data is fed to the modification device for each position of the scanner. The modification device blocks out those portions of the area being scanned that are outside the image. In this manner, the image is read while the border area is masked.

A film image reading apparatus reads the image of a strip film and can generate index display screen data to be displayed on a monitor screen of a host apparatus with the contents arbitrarily selected and set by the user. The film image reading apparatus also includes a memory to store index display setting screen data to be displayed on the monitor screen of the host apparatus and an display data generator which takes an output from an image reader and from a magnetic information reader which are entered from the host apparatus according to setting data selected and set on the index display setting screen, and which generates index display screen data to be displayed on the monitor screen of the host apparatus.

Film image reading apparatus and method in which multiple images are

An image reading device includes a planar light source having sufficiently even illumination to allow accurate shading correction to be performed regardless of the position in the auxiliary scanning direction. The image reading device includes a light source, a photoelectric conversion device, a movement device and a computer. The planar light source includes a rod-shaped light-emitting device and a light-guiding plate that receives light from the rod-shaped light-emitting device and emits light from a single surface. The rod-shaped light-emitting device is at least along one lengthwise side of the light-guiding plate. The photoelectric conversion device converts the image into an electrical image signal which is processed by the computer. The movement device moves the photoelectric conversion device in the auxiliary scanning direction, which is substantially perpendicular to the longer lengthwise side of the photoelectric conversion device and substantially perpendicular to the longer lengthwise side of the rod-shaped light-emitting device.
