A subject for the invention is to provide a friction material which contains neither any copper component nor metallic fibers and which has stable frictional properties and excellent wear resistance and is less apt to attack mating materials. This invention relates to a friction 10-35% by volume potassium titanate having a plurality of protrudent shapes, 3-10% by volume abrasive material having a Moh's hardness of 7 or higher, and 10-30% by volume elastomer-modified phenolic resin.

Friction material

A friction material includes a fiber base material, a friction modifier and a binder. The friction modifier includes two or more kinds of non-whisker-like titanate compounds. The non-whisker-like titanate compound includes non-whisker-like lithium potassium titanate. The friction material includes no copper component. Alternatively, a friction material includes a fiber base material, a friction modifier and a binder. The friction material includes a non-whisker-like titanate compound and a low-melting-point metal fiber. The friction material includes no copper component.

A cast-iron friction member is manufactured by: performing a nitrocarburizing treatment on a cast workpiece at a treatment temperature of 500&#xb0; C. to 600&#xb0; C. to thus form a nitrogen compound layer on a surface of the workpiece; and exposing the workpiece to an atmosphere when a temperature becomes 400&#xb0; C. to 480&#xb0; C. after the nitrocarburizing treatment so as to cool the workpiece to a room temperature while keeping a contact state with oxygen to thus form an iron oxide layer including FeOon a surface of the nitrogen compound layer.

Manufacturing method of cast-iron friction member

Granules for a friction material is produced by: granulating a mixture including a friction modifying granular material and a resin binder in a fluidized bed under a presence of a liquid including a water-soluble or water-dispersible binder. The granules have a particle size of from 100 to 2000 &#x3bc;m, an angle of repose of 40&#xb0; or less, and a compression breakage strength of 10 MPa or less. The friction material is obtained by using the granules.

In a brake member having a brake lining bonded to a brake shoe, the brake shoe has a chemical conversion coating provided on the surface thereof and a ceramics coating layer provided on the chemical conversion coating which has been formed by dipping in a ceramics precursor solution. The brake lining is bonded to the ceramics coating layer by heating under pressure. A method for bonding a brake lining and a brake shoe is provided with a step of degreasing, cleaning and acid-washing the surface of a brake shoe and then forming a chemical conversion coating thereon, a step of dipping the brake shoe having a chemical conversion coating formed thereon in a ceramics precursor solution to effect ceramics coating and a step of bonding a dried brake lining to the brake shoe under heating and pressure.
