Gas generator

A gas generator including a housing, a combustion chamber formed in the housing, the combustion chamber being packed with gas generant to generate high temperature gas by burning and also having a filtering member, an igniter device, secured in the housing, for igniting and burning the gas generant packed in the combustion chamber, and a gas discharge hole, formed in the housing, to communicate between an interior of the housing and an exterior of the same through the combustion chamber and a gas flow pass, wherein a coolant is arranged in the gas flow pass.

A gas generator S applicable to a side airbag or a passenger-side airbag. The gas generator S comprises an elongated cylindrical housing . The housing has, in its interior, a first combustion chamber , a third combustion chamber formed in a filtering member and a second combustion chamber which are formed in this order along an axial direction of the housing . The combustion chambers are each packed with gas generating agents that generate high temperature gas by burning, and ignition means for igniting only the gas generating agents packed in the first combustion chamber is disposed in a holder fitted in the housing

A gas generator that can controllably allow the airbag to inflate and expand slowly at an initial stage of the inflation and thereafter inflate and expand rapidly so that the intended function of the airbag can be fulfilled. In the gas generator, an enclosed space (S) in a housing ( ) is partitioned into two combustion chambers ( ), in which gas generating agents ( ), a filtering member ( ) and an igniter ( ) are arranged, respectively. The combustion chambers ( ) are communicated to each other through the filtering member ( ). The igniters are operated with time difference so that the airbag can be inflated and expanded moderately by a small amount of gas generated in one combustion chamber at the initial stage of inflation and then is inflated and expanded rapidly by a large amount of gas generated in the respective combustion chambers, thus achieving multistage control of the expansion of the airbag.
