The inventive negative electrode active material for a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery contains negative electrode active material particles which include silicon compound (SiO: 0.5≤x≤1.6) particles. The negative electrode active material particles are at least partially coated with a carbon material, contain one or more selected from LiSiOand LiSiO, and satisfy Ib/Ia≤4.8 and Ic/Ia≤6.0 in an X-ray diffraction measurement using a Cu-Kα line. Ia represents an intensity of a peak around 2θ=28.4° attributable to Si obtained by the X-ray diffraction. Ib represents a peak intensity of a peak attributable to LiSiOobtained by the X-ray diffraction. Ic represents a peak intensity of a peak attributable to LiSiOobtained by the X-ray diffraction. Thus, the present invention provides a negative electrode active material for a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery, which is stable over a long period even in an aqueous slurry and enables high capacity, favorable cycle characteristics and first-time efficiency.

The present invention is directed to a silicon-containing particle for use as a negative-electrode active material of a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery, wherein a crystal grain size is 300 nm or less, the crystal grain size being obtained by a Scherrer method from a full width at half maximum of a diffraction line attributable to Si (111) and near 2&#x3b8;=28.4&#xb0; in an x-ray diffraction pattern analysis, and a true density is more than 2.320 g/cmand less than 3.500 g/cm. The invention provides silicon-containing particles for use as a negative-electrode active material of a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery that enable manufacture of a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery having an excellent cycle characteristics and a higher capacity compared with graphite types.

A method for manufacturing a negative electrode active material for a secondary battery that uses a non-aqueous electrolyte, including the steps of: depositing silicon according to an electron beam vapor-deposition method with metallic silicon as a raw material on a substrate of which temperature is controlled from 800 to 1100&#xb0; C. at a vapor deposition rate exceeding 1 kg/hr in the range of film thickness of 2 to 30 mm; and pulverizing and classifying the deposited silicon to obtain the negative electrode active material. As a result, there is provided a method for manufacturing a negative electrode active material of silicon particles as an active material useful for a negative electrode of a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery that is, while maintaining high initial efficiency and battery capacity of silicon, excellent in the cycle characteristics and has a reduced volume change during charge/discharge.
