A vehicle includes an internal combustion engine, an exhaust purification catalyst, and an air fuel ratio sensor. The internal combustion engine is structured to be motored by an electric motor generator. The exhaust purification catalyst is structured to purify exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine. The air fuel ratio sensor is located upstream of the exhaust purification catalyst and structured to sense an air fuel ratio. When a quantity of oxygen stored in the exhaust purification catalyst is larger than a reference value, it is determined that inflow of oxygen into the exhaust purification catalyst has an insignificant effect on exhaust performance. Then, fuel injection of the internal combustion engine is stopped, the internal combustion engine is motored, and air fuel ratio learning is performed for learning of a sensed value of the air fuel ratio sensor.

In the present invention, an internal combustion engine () drives a generator (). The internal combustion engine () carries out a standby operation. The standby operation is an operation involving assisting power supply to a drive motor (). During the standby operation of the internal combustion engine (), the SoC of a battery () is equal to or higher than a predetermined SoC threshold. The operating point of the internal combustion engine () during the standby operation is further on a lower-output side than the operating point of the same during the charging of the battery (). The operating point of the internal combustion engine () during the standby operation is an operating point in which the collector pressure of the internal combustion engine () is equal to or higher than a predetermined collector pressure threshold. A hybrid vehicle includes a canister that adsorbs evaporative fuel generated in the fuel tank for an internal combustion engine. The hybrid vehicle can drive a drive wheel even when the internal combustion engine is stopped. When the internal combustion engine of the hybrid vehicle is stopped and a prescribed set of conditions is satisfied, the internal combustion engine is rotated by the generator. When the internal combustion engine of the hybrid vehicle is rotated by the generator, the evaporative fuel adsorbed in the canister is supplied to the upstream side of an upstream side exhaust catalytic converter device. In the hybrid vehicle, the introduced evaporative fuel as reducing agent is adsorbed in the upstream side exhaust catalytic converter device and a downstream side exhaust catalytic converter device.

An internal combustion engine () is provided with a turbocharger (), and is configured to be switchable between a stoichiometric combustion mode having a theoretical air-fuel ratio as a target air-fuel ratio and a lean combustion mode having a lean air-fuel ratio as a target air-fuel ratio. An air bypass valve () is provided in an air bypass passage () communicating a collector () on the downstream of a throttle valve () with the upstream side of a compressor () in an intake passage (). At the time of the shifting from the lean combustion mode to the stoichiometric mode, the throttle valve () is closed and the air bypass valve () is temporarily opened to decrease the pressure inside the collector () quickly.

A control method includes operating a first one of the wastegate valve and the exhaust adjustment mechanism with higher priority to a second one of the wastegate valve and the exhaust adjustment mechanism in response to a condition where an intake air quantity is to be varied along with a variation in engine load or air fuel ratio, wherein operation of the first one allows thermal energy to be recovered more efficiently under the condition than that of the second one.
