A liner of thin wall heat resistant material is positioned to receive exhaust gases from two adjacent exhaust port passages of an internal combustion engine, downstream from the exhaust valves. Each liner has a single outlet opening formed within a circular projection. A support piece has a central opening which receives said projection, and the support piece has an outer peripheral skirt which is mounted in a recess at the outer end of a dual exhaust port passage. The support piece also serves to block flow of exhaust gases in the space between the liner and the enclosing exhaust port passages. In a modification, each liner receives exhaust gases from only one exhaust valve.

Exhaust port liner support for internal combustion engine

An exhaust system for a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine employs exhaust port liners each connected to a pair of adjacent exhaust ports and having a single discharge opening. An intake passage leads from each discharge opening to an auxiliary reaction chamber. Each intake passage may communicate with the same auiliary reaction chamber, or separate auxiliary reaction chambers may be provided for each intake passage. In either case, a main reaction chamber surrounds and encloses the auxiliary reaction chamber(s), and an outer chamber surrounds and encloses the main reaction chamber. Each auxiliary reaction chamber discharges into the main reaction chamber through an opening, and a misaligned opening connects the main reaction chamber to the outer chamber. If two auxiliary reaction chambers are employed, their openings are placed so that the streams of exhaust gases passing through them intersect within the main reaction chamber.

Exhaust manifold system for internal combustion engine

An internal-combustion spark-ignition V-8 piston engine has a main exhaust gas reaction chamber positioned between the two banks of cylinders. Each cylinder has a main combustion chamber and an auxiliary combustion chamber connected by a torch nozzle restriction. Valved intake passages supply lean mixture to the main combustion chambers and rich mixture to the auxiliary combustion chambers. A spark plug is associated with each auxiliary combustion chamber. Valved exhaust passages supply hot exhaust gases to auxiliary exhaust gas reaction chambers, each of which projects through an insulated wall of the main exhaust gas reaction chamber, and discharges into it. Each of the auxiliary reaction chambers is substantially smaller in volume than the main reaction chamber and helps to minimize unwanted pollutants such as unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide in the exhaust gases by maintaining the exhaust gases at relatively high temperature and for relatively long time periods before discharge into the atmosphere, and over a wide range of engine speeds and loads. A separate air pump is not required.

Exhaust gas reaction chambers for internal combustion engine

An exhaust port liner system for an engine having an exhaust port with a common outlet and a dual inlet for the exhaust of two adjacent cylinders wherein an exhaust port liner is positioned within the exhaust port with a clearance about its periphery between the exhaust port and the exhaust port liner. A portion of the exhaust port liner has two legs with a space between them. The exhaust port liner is secured to the exhaust port at the common exhaust port outlet, and each leg is fitted and supported at the outer sides of the two exhaust port inlet sidewalls.

Exhaust port liner support system

Separate exhaust pipes each receive exhaust gases from a plurality of cylinders of an internal combustion engine. The exhaust pipes merge into a common outlet delivering exhaust gases into a first reaction chamber and then into a second reaction chamber enclosing the first reaction chamber. The second reaction chamber also encloses the exhaust pipes and outlet. The cross section areas of the exhaust pipes, outlet and continuing passageway through the first reaction chamber are substantially the same in effective cross section area to avoid temperature drop in the exhaust gases due to expansion. Oxygen-rich exhaust gases from the engine are held at a high temperature for long residence time to oxidize HC and CO and thereby minimize the quantity of these pollutants discharged into the atmosphere.

Exhaust reaction apparatus for multi-cylinder internal combustion engine

Each cylinder of an internal combustion spark ignition V-8 engine is provided with a main combustion chamber and an auxiliary combustion chamber connected by a torch opening. A lean air-fuel mixture is supplied to the main combustion chambers and a rich air-fuel mixture is supplied to the auxiliary combustion chambers. An exhaust reaction chamber assembly is positioned between the two banks of cylinders and is provided with a liner having a first reaction chamber therein. Four exhaust tubes each connected to receive exhaust gases from two adjacent cylinders project into the reaction chamber and each has a discharge end in close proximity and in substantial alignment with the discharge end of another exhaust tube so that exhaust gases discharged by each exhaust tube enter another exhaust tube and also enter into the first reaction chamber. The first reaction chamber discharges into an enclosing second reaction chamber from which heat is derived to vaporize both of the air-fuel mixtures.

Exhaust reaction assembly for multi-cylinder internal combustion engine

An internal-combustion spark-ignition V-8 piston engine has an exhaust gas reaction chamber body positioned between its two banks of cylinders. Each cylinder has a main combustion chamber communicating with an auxiliary combustion chamber by means of a torch opening. A main intake manifold with branching portion over the reaction chamber communicates with main intake passages to supply a lean air-fuel mixture to the main combustion chambers. An auxiliary intake manifold with branching portion directly below the central portion of the branching portion of the main intake manifold communicates with auxiliary intake passages to supply a rich air-fuel mixture to the auxiliary combustion chambers. Exhaust passages supply hot exhaust gases from the cylinders to exhaust gas conduits, each of which receives hot exhaust gases from two adjacent cylinders and projects through an insulated wall of the reaction chamber to discharge into it toward an end wall thereof. An exhaust pipe extends through a remote end wall at the opposite end of the reaction chamber. The top wall of the reaction chamber has an exhaust nozzle formed therein facing the branching portion of the auxiliary intake manifold. Also, the top wall of the reaction chamber has a layer of insulation within it and an opening formed to face both of the branching portions of the main and auxiliary intake manifolds. Within the peripheral wall of the exhaust gas reaction chamber body is formed an annular cooling water jacket, and a heat shielding plate covers the outer bottom portion of this exhaust gas reaction chamber body.

A residual gas control apparatus for internal combustion engines of the type including a main combustion chamber connected through a torch passage to an auxiliary combustion chamber having a spark plug, the residual gas control including a partial partition dividing the auxiliary combustion chamber into a first zone exposed to the spark plug and a second zone exposed to the torch passage, there being openings connecting the two zones, the partition and openings serving to control the percentages of residual gas in the two zones so as to produce optimum ignition and reduce NOx generation, and also to minimize turbulence in the vicinity of the spark plug.
