A liquid crystal display device includes a plurality of pixels arranged in a matrix pattern, each pixel including a first electrode and a second electrode for generating a transverse electric field, wherein: in a first group of pixels arranged in a line along either a row direction or a column direction, pairs of pixels are arranged repeatedly, each pair of pixels including two adjacent pixels that are different from each other in terms of an electrode structure of at least one of the first electrode and the second electrode; and voltages of the same polarity are applied to the two adjacent pixels included in the pair of pixels, and voltages of different polarities from each other are applied to two pixel pairs adjacent to each other in the first group of pixels.

The present invention provides a fringe field switching (FFS) mode liquid crystal display device that makes it possible to improve transmittance when a voltage is applied. The fringe field switching mode liquid crystal display device of the present invention includes: a first substrate; a second substrate arranged facing the first substrate; and a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the first substrate and the second substrate, wherein the first substrate includes, in order, a plurality of pixel electrodes, an insulating film covering the plurality of pixel electrodes, and a common electrode that is layered on top of the plurality of pixel electrodes and has a plurality of parallel slits formed therein, wherein steps that protrude towards a liquid crystal layer side are formed in the first substrate in at least sides of regions between the plurality of pixel electrodes that are parallel to a lengthwise direction of the plurality of parallel slits, and wherein the common electrode covers at least side faces of the steps.

A liquid crystal display device includes a vertical alignment liquid crystal layer, first and second substrates, first and second electrodes, and a pixel region which includes first, second, third and fourth liquid crystal domains in which liquid crystal molecules are tilted in first, second, third and fourth directions, respectively. The first liquid crystal domain is located close to at least a part of an edge of the first electrode, the second liquid crystal domain is located close to at least a part of another edge of the first electrode, the third liquid crystal domain is located close to at least a part of still another edge of the first electrode, and the fourth liquid crystal domain is located close to at least a part of yet another edge of the first electrode.

Disclosed is a liquid crystal display device of active matrix type. Each pixel electrode () includes either a single regional electrode () or two or more regional electrodes () which are electrically connected to each other. The or each regional electrode is provided with: a first electrode (cross-shaped electrode) () which has a pattern dividing a first region into a plurality of second regions (R, R, R, and R); and a plurality of stripe electrodes () which are provided in each of the second regions so as to extend from the first electrode and so as to be separated from each other by a distance. There is provided a liquid crystal display device of high picture quality with high brightness and small display unevenness. A vertical alignment type liquid crystal display device which has a plurality of pixels includes: a first electrode which includes, in each of the plurality of pixels, a plurality of first branch portions extending in a first direction and a plurality of second branch portions extending in a second direction that is different from the first direction; a second electrode disposed so as to oppose the first electrode; and a liquid crystal layer interposed between the first electrode and the second electrode, wherein a width of each of the plurality of first branch portions and the plurality of second branch portions is in a range not less than 1.4 &#x3bc;m and not more than 8.0 &#x3bc;m.

There is provided a liquid crystal display device of high image quality, which has high brightness and excellent viewing angle characteristics. A liquid crystal display device of the present invention includes a pair of polarizing plates, a first electrode, a second electrode provided so as to oppose the first electrode, and a liquid crystal layer interposed between the first electrode and the second electrode. Each of a plurality of pixels includes a first region and a second region which are separated by a line parallel to or perpendicular to the directions of the transmission axes of the pair of polarizing plates. A liquid crystal display device includes: a vertical alignment liquid crystal layer; first and second substrates facing each other with the liquid crystal layer interposed; first and second electrodes arranged on the first and second substrates to face the liquid crystal layer; and at least one alignment film in contact with the liquid crystal layer. A pixel region includes a first liquid crystal domain in which liquid crystal molecules are tilted in a first direction around the center of a plane, and approximately at the middle of the thickness, of the liquid crystal layer responsive to a voltage applied. The first liquid crystal domain is close to at least a part of an edge of the first electrode. The part includes a first edge portion in which an azimuthal direction, perpendicular to the part and pointing toward the inside of the first electrode, defines an angle greater than 90 degrees to the first direction. The first or second substrate has an opaque member including a first opaque portion for selectively shielding at least a part of the first edge portion from incoming light.

An active matrix liquid crystal display device includes: a liquid crystal layer; two substrates sandwiching the liquid crystal layer; and electrodes respectively provided in the two substrates, the electrodes applying voltage across the liquid crystal layer. A first electrode () in the substrate including a pixel selecting element () has a striped electrode pattern () aligning liquid crystal molecules along a stripe line direction when voltage is applied across the liquid crystal layer. A contact () of the first electrode () with the selecting element () is formed in a region opposed to, along a film thickness direction, a first region to which a signal liner (GLi) is allocated. This provides a liquid crystal display device in which a contact is made with the pixel electrode having the striped electrode pattern having the periodical arrangement, while alignment disorder of the liquid crystal molecules is not reflected on display.

The present invention provides a multi-domain type liquid crystal display device with a vertical alignment liquid crystal layer that can get a display operation done without making the viewer sense any unnaturalness and with the decrease in optical transmittance minimized. In the liquid crystal display device of this invention, the liquid crystal layer of each pixel has liquid crystal regions in which liquid crystal molecules tilt in multiple different directions when a voltage is applied between first and second electrodes. Each pixel has an opaque portion arranged on a boundary between the liquid crystal regions. The opaque portion is provided for at least one of the substrates so that when a voltage is applied between the first and second electrodes, the liquid crystal molecules neighboring the boundary will tilt while turning one of their end portions, which is closer to the substrate with the opaque portion, away from the boundary. The opaque portion includes a first shielding layer and a second shielding layer, which overlaps with the first shielding layer with a predetermined gap left between them.

A VA-mode liquid crystal display device which includes a pair of alignment sustaining layersandformed by a photopolymerized material on surfaces of a pair of vertical alignment filmsandwhich are closer to a liquid crystal layer, and a cruciform openingprovided only in a counter electrode. When a predetermined voltage is applied across the liquid crystal layer, four liquid crystal domains are formed such that the azimuths of the directors of the respective liquid crystal domains are different from one another and form an angle of about 45' relative to the polarization axes of a pair of polarizing plates. The fibers are arranged in at least one predetermined direction within a plane of the composite substrate. The composite substrate substantially transmits visible radiation and has a predefined retardation that is associated with the predetermined direction in which the fibers are arranged.

A liquid crystal display device according to the present invention includes: a vertical alignment liquid crystal layer; first and second electrodes arranged on one surface of first and second substrates to face the liquid crystal layer; and first and second alignment films arranged on the first and second electrodes, respectively, in contact with the liquid crystal layer. The first alignment film has been subjected to an optical alignment treatment by obliquely irradiating a first alignment film material, having a photosensitive wavelength within the wavelength range of 250 nm to 380 nm, with light including the photosensitive wavelength. The device further includes: a metal layer arranged between the first alignment film and the first substrate; and a first resin layer arranged between the metal layer and the first alignment film. The first resin layer has an optical property that attenuates the intensity of light, which has been incident on the first resin layer and then reflected from the metal layer, to 60% or less at the photosensitive wavelength.
