Various embodiments of the present technology comprise a method and apparatus for an ignition system. In various embodiments, the ignition system activates a soft shutdown of an ignition coil in the event of an over dwell condition. The apparatus comprises a first counter and a second counter that are selectively activated at predetermined events. An output of the second counter controls the value of a reference current that decreases linearly over time and wherein a rate of change of the reference current may be adjusted according to a frequency of a clock signal. In various embodiments, the soft shutdown operates independent of the supply voltage and temperature.

Methods and apparatus for an ignition system

A pair of PWM signals having mutually opposite or identical phases is applied to both terminals of a load to drive the load. An anomaly detection circuit detects a state of change in the pair of PWM signals (PWM+ and PWM&#x2212;), performs counting operation when at least one PWM signal stops changing, and outputs an anomaly detection signal when the count value becomes a predetermined value.

Driver circuit

A power amplifier for driving a load connected to an output terminal having an output transistor connected in parallel with a corresponding current detection path between the output terminal and a power supply. The detection path includes a switching device and a resistor connected in series, the switching device is turned on only during an on-state period of the corresponding output transistor, and the presence or absence of over-current generation is detected at the output transistors on the basis of a sensing signal obtained from a point connecting the switching device and the resistor. When over-current is detected, the operation of the output transistors is stopped to protect the amplifier.
