A vacuum retention agent, which is safe, easy to handle, saves space, and absorbs residual gases inside a hermetic envelope to maintain the hermetic envelope in a high degree of vacuum is provided in place of the conventional metal getter. A display device including the vacuum retention agent is provided. A gas occlusion material containing ZrO(where 1&#x2266;x&#x2266;2) is disposed in a hermetic envelope forming a self-luminous element. ZrOx is formed in pattern from a paste of zirconium dioxide, which can be generally obtained as a reagent. In a production step, the patterned self-luminous element is hermetically sealed in vacuum in an atmosphere at 120&#xb0; C. to 500&#xb0; C., so that the vacuum retention effect is more improved.

Self-luminous elements and method for producing the same

A flat vacuum envelope is provided where an anode electrode is conductively connected to the contact portion of a high-voltage supplying lead with high reliability so that the connection electrode plate is not stripped from the anode electrode ( ). A field emission region ( ), which is formed of a gate layer and emitters, is laminated on a first glass electrode ( ). An anode electrode ( ), which is formed of a fluorescent display substance and a transparent electrode, is laminated on a second glass substrate ( ). An exhaust tube ( ) is formed to the first glass substrate ( ) to evacuate the inside of the vacuum envelope. The lead ( ) is connected to the anode electrode ( ) via the connection anode plate ( ). The connection anode plate ( ) is joined to the anode electrode ( ) by the resilient member ( ) so that the conductivity thereof is not impaired while the exhaust tube ( ) is being sealed.

Electrode structure in flat vacuum envelope

A field emission cathode that can uniform the number of electrons emitted from each emitter and can prevent a line defect even when a gate electrode is electrically short-circuited with an emitter. The movement of electrons in a channel formed on the channel forming electrode is controlled by applying a positive voltage to the current control electrode, so that the current supplied from the cathode electrode to the emitter can be controlled. If the emitter is short-circuited with the gate electrode, the increased current density destroys the channel, so that the current supply to the emitter can be stopped.

Field emission cathode

A fluorescent material is described which remains uninfluenced in the presence of oxygen during fabrication, allows a highly efficient light emission due to the concentration of donors being adjustable as appropriate, and is excellent in giving a bright light and having a long life. The fluorescent material is represented by the formula Ga.sub.1-x In.sub.x N:M,X, wherein 0.ltoreq.x&lt;0.8, M is at least one element selected from the group of Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Zn, Cd and Hg, and X is at least one element selected from the group of C, Si, Ge, Sn and Pb. The fluorescent material preferably has concentration ranges (mol %) of the elements M and X of 0.005&lt;M&lt;0.7 and 0.002&lt;X&lt;0.8. The starting materials utilized for preparing the fluorescent material are substances devoid of oxygen, preferably (SiH.sub.a N.sub.b).sub.n where a=1-3, b=0 or 1, and n=an integer of 1 or more.

Fluorescent material

A phosphorescent material has an excellent life time characteristic when it is applied to display device such as a fluorescent display device and includes a body portion composed of alkali metal and an oxide, and a protective coat formed over a surface of the body portion. The protective coat is composed of an oxide containing at least one element selected from the group consisting of Al, Ti, Si, Zn, Sn, Bi, Sb, Ce, Y, Ta, Gd, Ru and Ga.
